Why Is Lizzo Quitting Music, And Why Are Some Internet Users Celebrating The News? Lizzo's Latest Controversies Explained
Famous pop singer Lizzo, once known for her upbeat music and message of body positivity, has been a rather controversial figure in the past few months following allegations of harassment and fat-shaming that led to a lawsuit late last year.
Now, it appears she's decided to leave the public eye, but that's far from the whole story. Here's everything you need to know about Lizzo supposedly quitting music and why so many are reacting to the announcement with celebrations and disinterest.
Did Lizzo Really Quit Music?
Simply put, yes, she did. She claims she is quitting, despite having a performance as recently as the day before, in which she performed at a fundraiser for President Joe Biden, and shortly after releasing a new fashion line, Yitty. On the evening of March 29th, she posted the following message to her Instagram:
I'm getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I'm starting to feel like the world doesn't want me in it. I'm constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views… being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look… my character being picked apart by people who don't know me and disrespecting my name.

Why Did Lizzo Quit Music?
Here's where things get complicated. Lizzo claims she's quitting because she was tired of the harassment sent her way. There is indeed a lot of this since much of her reputation is built around her weight and physical appearance. But many people suspect it's something else.
Reactions to Lizzo's post were not particularly positive. Some believe she may be simply unable to handle the pressure after she performed at President Joe Biden's recent fundraiser, which placed her alongside political controversy.
Many more people have a different theory — that Lizzo is actually "playing the victim" in an attempt to regain sympathy amid the lawsuits and accusations levied against her.
What's The Lizzo Lawsuit About?
Lizzo is currently embroiled in several lawsuits, in which past employees of the pop star claim they were treated inappropriately by Lizzo in several different ways. The most famous lawsuit comes from three of her former backup dancers, who claim they were subjected to sexual harassment, a hostile work environment and even instances of fat shaming.
Lizzo allegedly made rude comments about her dancers' physical appearances, fired anyone who disagreed with her on small issues, made dancers endure 12-hour rehearsals, and coerced a dancer into inappropriately touching another woman at a club.
Allegedly, Lizzo even took her dancers to a nude cabaret bar in Amsterdam, where wildly inappropriate things were done with bananas, the likes of which can't even be mentioned here. Know Your Meme has a page on the controversy where you can read more about the lawsuit and allegations if you're curious.
How Are People Reacting To Lizzo Quitting Music?
While Lizzo does still have some devoted fans who believe her side of the story, overall, people seem pretty pleased and amused by this news. Some don't even believe it's true, thinking this is a publicity stunt.
Other social media users dislike Lizzo for performing at Biden's fundraiser, while a much larger portion of people dislike Lizzo for the allegations of sexual harassment and fat-shaming against her. In a rare occurrence, two opposite sides of the political spectrum have come together to agree on something — that they're okay with Lizzo's career coming to an end.
