Overview
Lizzo Quitting Music or Lizzo's "I QUIT" Message refers to pop star Lizzo declaring her exodus from the public eye, citing that her character was being defamed and she was "being dragged" for her physical appearance. The news follows several lawsuits filed against Lizzo, including a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by three of her former dancers, as well as a bullying, harassment and discrimination lawsuit filed by a former employee of her fashion line. After being posted to her Instagram in late March 2024, the announcement prompted numerous reactions and memes online, many unsympathetic toward the musician.
Background
On March 29th, 2024, Lizzo posted a captionless image on her Instagram @lizzobeeating, writing that she was “tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet.” The image contained a declaration that she was “quitting,” referencing her music career and presumably her fashion line as well, though some speculated it could also mean social media. In the post, Lizzo does not directly reference her ongoing lawsuits and controversies but does express frustration with perceived attacks on her character and appearance. The Instagram[1] post received 504,000 likes in about seven hours (seen below).
I'm getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it. But I'm starting to feel like the world doesn't want me in it. I'm constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views… being the butt of the joke every single time because of how I look… my character being picked apart by people who don't know me and disrespecting my name.
I didn't sign up for this shit —
I QUIT
Since Lizzo had participated in a fundraiser with President Joe Biden and former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama the day prior (shown below), some insisted there was a correlation between the two events.
While many commenters insisted backlash to the Biden fundraiser was to blame, many more users shared the belief that Lizzo was trying to back out of the public spotlight after facing numerous sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination allegations, including multiple lawsuits that are currently underway. One notable lawsuit was filed against Lizzo by three of her former backup dancers, who allege that they faced many instances of inappropriate behavior from the singer. Allegations made in this lawsuit claim that Lizzo brought dancers to a nude cabaret bar, overworked them with 12-hour rehearsals, made fat-shaming comments and more.
Online Reactions
Many reactions to Lizzo's quitting were positive or mocking in nature, with numerous Twitter / X users sharing memes about the singer leaving the public spotlight. On March 29th, 2024, X[2] user @kirawontmiss used a Family Guy meme to express disinterest in any news about Lizzo's career, gaining 11,000 likes and 600 reposts in under three hours (seen below, left).
Also on March 29th, the X[3] account @MostlyPeacefull posted a reaction image to show a group of coworkers in celebration, comparing it to "The Internet after fat shaming Lizzo into quitting," with the post earning 17,000 likes and 1,200 reposts in about five hours (seen below, right).
Some remained skeptical of Lizzo's claim that she would be quitting the industry. For instance, on March 29th, X[4] user @catturd2 posted that Lizzo wasn't really quitting and that "her huge ego just needs some attention." The post earned 8,500 likes and 740 reposts in about five hours (seen below).
Memes referencing the announcement appeared on Reddit in the following days as well. For example, on March 30th, 2024, Redditor elch3w posted a See? Nobody Cares meme to the /r/memes[5] subreddit, receiving over 51,000 upvotes and 1,600 comments in two days (shown below).
Developments
