The Witcher is a Netflix Original Series debuting in 2019, and honestly, its memes are perhaps more famous than the series itself. The Witcher is a one-season (so far) tale of three intersecting storylines, that of mutant monster-slayer Geralt of Rivia (The Witcher), a mage named Yennefer, and Ciri, a runaway princess. It’s based on a Polish book series by Andrzej Sapkowski, which later became a role-playing board game, videogame series and more before becoming a mainstay in meme culture lately.

For fans of any fantasy series or the original franchise, The Witcher is a great fit. There are a lot of reasons to watch the show, from escaping the plague-infested real world to taking a shot every time Geralt curses. But we’re not all as sophisticated as Rotten Tomatoes, so here’s why you should give The Witcher a chance, not for its redeeming values, but for its memes. Here are the best episodes to look out for.

This episode largely focuses on Yennefer’s life, which is the most depressing character backstory since Batman watched his parents die. But the best memes come from the few intercut scenes of Geralt and his friend Jaskier, who essentially follows him around the whole series and plays music about it, much like your weird middle school teacher who had a laugh track button for her cheesy jokes. "Toss a Coin To Your Witcher" is a song written by Jaskier, a character who aimlessly follows Geralt for the entirety of the series. This song has no right to be as catchy as it is, and millions of fans online are making jokes and elaborate remixes from it.

Here, we’re also introduced to Torque the Sylvan, a "rare and intelligent creature." We never find out what exactly Torque the Sylvan is, but Geralt proceeds to violently attack him anyway. In between blows, the papier-mâché goat-man hurls insults back, to which Geralt replies, "You are intelligent, I’ll give you that." This has limitless uses when Torque’s lines are replaced, with anything from water fluoridation conspiracies to the Bee Movie transcript quoted as proof of his intellectual superiority.

Most Meme Potential: Season 1, Episode 4: Of Banquets, Bastards and Burials

Throughout the seasons, Geralt cusses and repeats "Hmm?" constantly, as human interaction has caused his brain cells to disintegrate over time. This episode takes place before the others and explains why he’s given up on everyone. Here, Geralt is unwillingly dragged to a dinner party, where he unintentionally becomes obligated to kidnap the child of a hedgehog man.

The character design of a human-hedgehog hybrid is bound to be weird, but it’s even worse than you’d expect. This isn’t the only bizarre image in this episode, and Geralt is socially uncomfortable in the background of every scene, which is a great bonus for reaction images. Geralt’s single-word catchphrases also have made famous memes in the past, and there are quite a few examples in this scene that stand out more than any other as he shouts swears at a silent crowd. While many can relate to the social anxiety this episode brings with it, there’s an amazing amount of unrecognized potential here in any scene from the banquet.
