"You Are Intelligent. I'll Give You That" refers to a series of memes based on a scene from The Witcher Netflix series in which the main protagonist Geralt beats up minor character Torque the Sylvan and comments on him being an intelligent creature. Following the premiere of the series, the format gained popularity online on Reddit and Facebook, particularly as a way to promote a certain opinion.

Origin

On December 20th, 2019, The Witcher series premiered on Netflix.[1] In episode two "Four Marks," main protagonist Geralt of Rivia, portrayed by Henry Cavill, briefly fights Torque the Sylvan. After Torque claims to be a rare and intelligent creature, Geralt punches him and admits his intelligence.

On December 21st, 2019, Redditor[2] Tendy777 posted a three-panel meme based on the scene to /r/HistoryMemes subreddit, gaining over 11,700 upvotes in four days (shown below).

On December 21st, Redditor[3] figgernaggotXp posted a template for the format to /r/MemeEconomy subreddit. On the same day, Redditor[4] KingArthur2197 posted a meme based on the format to /r/freefolk subreddit, receiving over 420 upvotes (shown below). On December 22nd, 2019, Facebook[5] user Brian Dmyszewicz reposted Tendy777's meme to The Witcher Ciriposting group, where it gained over 530 reactions. On the same day, Facebook[6] user Giorgi Tabidze posted a meme that received over 400 reactions (shown below, right).


T'am Torque the Sylivan, a rare and intelligent creature! They should've included "Geralt rescuing Ciri in Brokilon" short-story instead of Yennefer's backstory, which could've been used as little flashbacks later. You are intelligent, I'll give you that.

In the following days, the format gained popularity in meme communities on Reddit and Facebook. For example, a December 22nd meme by Redditor[7] SmallPeenwow received over 31,200 upvotes in /r/dankmemes in four days. A same-day meme by Facebook[8] user David Ralyea gained over 1,500 reactions.
