Weekend Meme Review: 'Cyberpunk 2077,' Mr. Krabs Overdoses On Ketamine, Sephiroth Impaling Mario

As completely expected, Cyberpunk 2077 has completely sucked the air out of the room when it comes to memes as of late. Though others tried to come into their own this weekend, even another unexpected and hyped gaming meme for Super Smash Bros' latest character reveal, there was just not enough room to compete with Cyberpunk.

In the end, the three memes that we saw the most this weekend were Cyberpunk 2077 variations, Sephiroth Impaling Mario, and Mr. Krabs Overdoses On Ketamine. Here's the roundup.

Mr. Krabs Overdoses On Ketamine

Mr. Krabs Overdoses On Ketamine is actually not the first instance of a meme being made revolving around a beloved childhood figure and ketamine. The previous example of this was with Yoda's addiction, where the character was heavily addicted to ketamine and would do things, often involving his 2001 Honda Civic, in the pursuit of Ketamine to overdose on. If this sounds strangely familiar, that's because it is identical to the Mr. Krabs setup. However, where Yoda had some voiced short meme clips made to help spread it out, Mr. Krabs now has an indie game helping to get this meme out there. It definitely helps that the game is played by relatively well-known YouTubers, meaning this meme has the potential to last for a while longer.

Sephiroth Impales Mario

Sephiroth Impaling Mario is something that kids have been dreaming about for years, but never actually expected to happen. Though Super Smash Brothers Ultimate has had more than its fair share of leaks and rumors, this character reveal was one that was completely unexpected. There wasn't a single rumor that Sephiroth was the next character, and the reveal trailer was wild. At one point, it shows Sephiroth impaling Mario, seemingly killing him. It is later shown a few seconds after that he simply lifted Mario up by his overalls, and the two images were quickly combined into a meme.

Cyberpunk 2077

The question with Cyberpunk 2077 wasn't if it would be memed, the question was always what from it would get the meme treatment. Shortly after the game was released, the first big thing to get spread around through memes was Penis 2, which is the name of one of the genital customization options available during character creation. Because it was already known that Cyberpunk would have a fair amount of such customization, it was expected that some meme content would be found in that area, but what ended up getting big first was just the simply stated "Penis 2." Despite the buggy launch and mixed reception, expect Cyberpunk memes to be a mainstay for quite a while longer.
