And the meme of July 2023 goes to …

It couldn't be anything else — the double feature of Barbenheimer is the match made in heaven and a Just the Two of Us meme incarnate. Opposites attract, they say, and did they attract: This cultural phenomenon of moviegoers seeing Greta Gerwig's comedy adventure Barbie and Christopher Nolan's biographical drama Oppenheimer generated both record profits for both films and a record number of memes about the unlikely duo for the entirety of July. A definitive first place with 40 percent of your votes.

One Must Imagine Sisyphus Being Happy

The concluding sentence of Albert Camus' essay The Myth of Sisyphus became a leitmotif of extensive Sisyphus-posting we witnessed on TikTok for the entirety of the past month. The struggle of Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a mountain for all eternity has been feeling especially relatable as of late, so props to Homer for writing that one down for us. We're getting out Hades with this one as Sisyphus & Bouldy score 11 percent of total votes.

Skibidi Toilet

While we already had Skibidi Toilet on our voting list two months prior and you ranked it the fifth best meme of May, we decided that the eerie G-mod saga of cameramen saving the world from toilet heads deserved another chance. The best indicator for that was Skibidi Toilet breaking out of the Gen Alpha YouTube purgatory into Twitter, with the vocal part of the app judging the multi-generational presence of G-mod memes in our lives as "good." Skibidi Toilet climbs to third place this month thanks to nine percent of your votes.

Black Cat Zoning Out

In fourth place with seven percent of your votes we have Black Cat Zoning Out, a TikTok meme that, well, perfectly illustrates the feeling of zoning out in the middle of something — and has a cat in it, which instantly makes it better than any human counterpart we had before. Boring conversations and social gatherings have never been easier to convert into likes on TikTok now that we have this format.

Tom Holland Getting Backshots

Well, not Tom Holland, but his character Danny Sullivan (more specifically, his female alter-ego 🤓) in The Crowded Room, but hey, hardly anyone knows who that is. So yes, the clips of Tom Holland getting it on with another man have gone viral on social media, and that would probably not be that big of a deal if Tom Holland wasn't in a relationship with Zendaya, and imagining her reaction to the scene has been too fun a concept for many people. Holland's backstage adventures get five percent of the total votes.

And there we have our top five memes of July, but wait, there's more! Our list would be incomplete if we didn't mention the memes that most of you coldheartedly rejected, subjecting them to the horrible fate of not being in the top half of the list. Here in our little meme oubliette we have Twitter rebranding to X and nobody having any of it (6%), the woman who cried TMFINR (5%), the rodent bon vivant extraordinaire Mr. Chedda (5%), the intensely staring memes of Oppenheimer (3%), Gang, Gang, Ice Cream So Good and high NPC energy of Pinkydoll (2%), the subtle intricacies of Girl Dinner and Boy Dinner (2%), SpongeBob's very cursed "Behind Closed Doors" artbook (2%), nearly two dozen Barbie formats (2%) and last but no list, everyone being forced to learn about who Adam22 and Lena the Plug are (1%).

Thank you for voting and see you next month!
