Despite having a strong first week, this Spooktober has quieted down as of late. Whether that's because of a simple lack of spooky memes or that other events, such as the first presidential debate and subsequent positive COVID test, are taking up all the spotlight is up for debate. Because of this, however, the stage was set for two recently forgotten memes to come back from the brink, and a new gaming meme genre to join their ranks. The memes we saw over the weekend were Credit Card Declines, A Drive Into Deep Left Field By Castellanos and Genshin Impact.

Credit Card Declines

Credit Card Declines may look like a new meme at first glance, but in reality, it's actually a more specific offshoot of a meme from earlier this year — Imagine Your Card Declines. What makes this so interesting is that the original meme had the setup of imagining if your card was declined with the various situations that followed, while this current meme expands on that point and visually shows a hyperbolic example that answers the earlier iteration's question. These are interesting examples that first asked a question and then later answered it themselves, creating a unique lifecycle not found in other memes.

A Drive Into Deep Left Field By Castellanos

A Drive Into Deep Left Field By Castellanos is what happens when an unfortunately timed on-air apology gets interrupted by professionalism, and the result is a new copypasta. When Thom Brennaman tried to make an apology for something he said while not knowing his microphone was live, the baseball player Castellanos hit a home run, which made for a bizarre moment reminiscent of a YouTuber putting an ad in the middle of an apology video. This event happened a few weeks ago, but the feeling never left and the 'pasta kept getting used online. With the recent announcement of the Trumps contracting COVID, this fresh 'pasta found itself, once again, served online to the masses.

Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact is a game made by MiHoYo and is a Gacha-style game in the spirit of Breath of the Wild. The game features a small cast of characters, with premium ones being available via the Gacha system, which allows you to explore the world with a venerable collection of waifus. Unlike Breath of the Wild, this game is accessible on PC, PS4 and mobile, allowing for far greater spread as everyone has a phone now. The game came out of beta on September 28th, and it didn't take long for a community to form and memes to be spawned from it. Most of the memes come from the practice of "rerolling" an account, which means creating an account for the sole purpose of using the Gacha system to draw characters and recreating the account if the desired characters are not acquired. While time-consuming, anecdotes aplenty show that some people are willing to do this tedious task in excess of 50 times, at 30 minutes per reroll.
