About
A Drive Into Deep Left Field By Castellanos refers to a copypasta which grew popular among sports fans on Twitter after Cincinnati Reds announcer Thom Brennaman, while making an on-air apology for using a homophobic slur during a game, had his apology interrupted by a home run by Cincinnati Reds right fielder Nicholas Castellanos, which Brennaman called. The call has turned into a bait-and-switch copypasta on Twitter, seeing use in parodies of serious tweets and news stories on the platform.
Origin
On August 19th, 2020, during the first game of a doubleheader between the Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals, Reds announcer Thom Brennaman was caught on a hot mic calling an unknown city "one of the fag capitals of the world"[1] (shown below).
Brennaman was suspended by the Reds immediately following the game. During the second game of the doubleheader, he appeared at the top of the fifth inning to issue an apology. His apology was interrupted by Reds right fielder Nicholas Castellanos hitting a home run, which Brennaman called while giving his statement. This caused his apology to read:
I made a comment earlier tonight that I guess went out over the air that I am deeply ashamed of. If I have hurt anyone out there, I can't tell you how much I say from the bottom of my heart I'm so very, very sorry. I pride myself and think of myself as a man of faith, as there's a drive into deep left field by Castellanos and that'll be a home run. And so that'll make it a 4-0 ballgame. I don't know if I'm going to be putting on this headset again. I don't know if it's going to be for the Reds. I don't know if it's going to be for my bosses at Fox.
Twitter user @allairematt tweeted the clip shortly after it aired, gaining over 3,000 retweets and 15,000 likes (shown below).

Spread
On September 25th, 2020, Brennaman resigned from his position as the Cincinnati Reds announcer.[2] In response to the Reds official statement thanking Brennaman for his years in the position, users began Brennaman's apology/home-run call in the replies (examples shown below).
Over the following week, the copypasta evolved to see usage in parodies that had nothing to do with baseball. For example, on October 2nd, 2020, Twitter user @RichardStaff[3] posted a parody of Trump announcing he had COVID on Twitter with the copypasta, gaining over 3,100 retweets and 23,000 likes (shown below, left). User @luoldengmvp[4] used it as a parody of tweets wishing Donald and Melania Trump well, gaining over 470 retweets and 4,000 likes (shown below, right).
