What Is The 'Goku And Vegeta In The Rain' Meme? The Viral 'Dragon Ball' Redraw Memes Explained
The anime series Dragon Ball Z has inspired what might be one of the biggest redraw memes of 2024 thanks to a funny piece of fan art. The artwork depicts Goku and Vegeta in the rain with very different expressions on their faces, as Goku tries to catch the raindrops on his tongue.
But where does the art come from and how is it being used as a meme? Here's what you need to know.
What Is The 'Goku And Vegeta In The Rain' Meme?
Back in April 2023, an artist who goes by @diz_korall_DB on X posted an original piece of Dragon Ball Z fan art depicting Goku and Vegeta standing in the rain. In the art, Vegeta, standing in the foreground, has a stoic, serious look on his face. Meanwhile, in the background, Goku is trying to catch raindrops on his tongue.
The art largely flew under the radar for the next year. Then, in late October 2024, X artist @BFrog__ posted an amateur redraw of the artwork. The post garnered over 270,000 likes and 30,000 reposts over the next two weeks, inspiring a ton of redraws that are now going viral outside of the original artwork's context.
How Is 'Goku And Vegeta In The Rain' Used In Memes?
Thanks to the viral X post, the Goku and Vegeta in the rain art has become a viral redraw template. That means, artists are taking the artwork and redrawing it, but replacing Vegeta and Goku with new characters. Mostly, these characters come from other anime series, but no character is off limits, leading to some broad examples.
Some viral examples of the meme have redrawn Goku and Vegeta as characters from Over the Garden Wall, Animal Crossing, Spyro and Yakuza, to name just a few. There are seriously a ton of examples out there, largely as quote-reposts to the post by @diz_korall_DB, but also on Reddit, Tumblr and elsewhere online.
