Back in December 2024, u/PeepsRebellion posted an absurd meme to /r/NintendoSwitch2 comparing a water buffalo to the rumored size of the Nintendo Switch 2. The post simply shows a mockup of a Switch 2 next to the animal and garnered over 1,100 upvotes. This post inspired a wave of memes about water buffalo on the subreddit over the next month.
The memes are meant to be nonsensical and insert references to the animal anywhere they can, alongside references to the Switch 2. Throughout December 2024 and January 2025, we've seen memes about water buffalo Switch 2 profile pictures, a water buffalo visiting Nintendo HQ and even a Switch 2 logo mockup that looks like a water buffalo.
What's With The 'Water Buffalo' Comments On Nintendo's YouTube Videos?
On January 8th, 2025, the /r/NintendoSwitch2 subreddit decided to take the meme outside of the community to the internet at large. That day, one of the mods made a post encouraging people to brigade the comment sections of Nintendo's YouTube videos with comments about water buffalo. The post claims this is meant as a harmless prank and encourages participants to also like the videos.
The idea behind the prank is to keep making references to water buffalo in Nintendo's YouTube uploads until the official announcement of the Switch 2. The campaign has so far been largely successful, with the comment sections of most of the new videos on the Nintendo of America channel heavily featuring water buffalo references.
