Unofficial KYM Podcast?

I just have an idea about having a fan-made podcast starring the users here, talking about what's going on in the internet and this site, like memes and stuff. I've talked to no original names, NeonWabbit, Samekichi, and 21 about it, and here's the thing we've decided what the podcast could be:

  • Hosts: NeonWabbit, no original names (Although , he said he's busy sometimes), Loli (pending), and RandomMan (pending).
  • Possible Podcast Names: Podcast Your Memes, KYM Kommunity Kollective Podcast (KKK Podcast, it was NoN's idea), MemeCast, Know Your MemeCast (KYMCast)
  • Schedule & Length: ≈ 1-2 hours, biweekly on weekends
  • Where to Upload: YouTube or Soundcloud
  • Possible Formats: Record over fanart of the KYMCast hosts, format like The Co-optional Podcast (?)
  • Other Things: Skype for communication (duh), NoN as the editor/recorder of the podcast

If you have suggestions, comments, or fanart for the podcast, just post it here. This is not from the OFFICIAL KYM staff or RocketBoom. It's only made by some of the KYM community, and for now, it's just an idea. Thanks for reading this, and I hope the podcast actually becomes a thing,

Almost offended I wasn't asked to join the podcast. Eh, oh well. Probably would be 2 hours of me talking about anime tiddies or Loli and I being weeaboos.

Alrighty then, here's a bunch of updates:

  • Send a voice sample: If you're gonna join, NoN will need a recording sample for the podcast. Please record with the microphone you use for Skype. Send it to NoN by PM for quality checking.
  • Facecam is not needed.
  • Special Guests?: One of my ideas was having a guest from the community every podcast, besides the hosts. I'm not really sure if it's a good idea or not, so you guys decide: Strawpoll

Also, please post what time (and timezone) are you available for recording.

That's about it for now.

I'll send mine in once Loli and/or RandomMan are officially going to be in it.
They're already on my skype contacts anyways…. So is No orgininal names…

what the hell would you guys talk about for 2 hours? the idea of a podcast is interesting and i'd give it a listen but would there be topics or just you guys yammering on about nothing?

The topics would be whatever is happening or any trending topics in KYM.

I'm going to go the overly critical route, but if you go through with this, then it might help you out later on.

If you can pull off a weekly podcast of an hour with constant talking on memes and internet phenomena, I'd be impressed even if it wasn't particularly entertaining. To do one and get to a point in a few months that it's an entertaining podcast might be nigh revolutionary and something you'd better get with Cheezburger on or fully defect from the site once you realize you have a hit, because you might become something bigger than Internet famous.

Talking with your friends for a few hours while incorporating memes is one thing. You can get in a Steam chat and fling image URLs, throw in the occasional "ayy lmao," and talk about your day for hours. But doing a full hour (at least) podcast on largely visual memes in a semi-organized manner on a strictly audio-based podcast so that an outside audience enjoys it beyond already established in-jokes only the hosts would get is another thing.

  • My worry (a big one) is the content and the medium. How do you organize an entertaining audio-based podcast on mostly visual memetic phenomena? I see a podcast of it to be as interesting as an audiobook of well-written KYM articles at best.
    • Even music-based memes are a bit oppressive. You can play Nyan Cat and variants, but then it turns into a music show. But you certainly can't really talk about music on a casual or theoretical level.
      • Talking meme music like you would a pop song isn't really possible. The lyrics generally aren't stirring, the music isn't revolutionary (a lot are parodies)…
      • You will lose your audience if you go into music theory on meme music.
  • Something to consider: what sort of format would you use over the course of an hour?
    • Will you have regular segments where you talk for about 20 minutes about some lead topic, about 10 minutes on budding memes, 10 minutes devoted to memetic music that you can play on air (you may have issues if someone "owns" that music though,) 15 minutes with a guest host of some note, and a 5-minute wrap up?
    • Will you have a loose schedule?
    • Are you anticipating just talking and getting into a groove? (I don't see this working unless you have outstanding on-air chemistry. Too much dead time, "uhh's," this only works if your audience simply likes you, at which point, you could do a podcast on just about anything.)

I don't know if talking about fanart can even fly.
  • How do you talk fanart? Like, how does a conversation go?
    • Do you have links uploaded to a thread here so the audience can look at it while you talk about it?
    • This might work if you discuss fanart trends in a fandom, but I don't see that working for memes, which is probably your main draw. How much can you say about, say, Pepe? Even if you can talk about it for 5 minutes, how interesting will that talk be to an audience?
      • There are a ton of podcasts for other fandoms already who are more invested and can talk more about it, and you might lose parts of your audience as you move from one fandom/focus to another. Heck, even the KYM userbase won't have interest in most memes and fandoms. So even if there is a way to talk about them, your audience might not stick around if they hate ponies, Touhou, or whatever else.
  • I could see a podcast focused on spread, theory of origins, differences in origins of memetic phenomena for certain memes (again, akin to a discussion of actual "memeology" or a KYM article.)
    • But that's pretty academic. You'd have to have some stellar hosts to go that route and be entertaining. You'd be a Bill Nye-like collective on memes.

Either way, best of luck. If you're having fun, then that's justification in itself.

Alright its an hour before the schedule time we we're gonna do it.
We have not gotten any contact from Loli or Randomman. I don't really think we can do it tonight but I'll see about tomorrow night. If you would actually like to do it please post and maybe we can get around to it (not very likely but anythings possible). Also we have added three new people to the team: Calkarot, Dragon Lord, and Tupolev.

I know literally nothing about this sudden announcement.

I think they decided to include you in the host because honestly you are one of the most dicksucked well-known users.

Talking about fanart and stuff really isn't my type of thing, plus I hardly ever look at it, so I'll be next to useless in that topic. Only vidya might work in comparison to the other hosts.

Tbh, I don't think I am what you're looking for in a host. Not even mentioning my timezone.

If you guys manage to pull off a decent podcast, I don't mind being a (semi-)regular guest on the show. Since this is a memesite podcast, I can probably fill up 20-30 minutes about meme theories and opinions or talk about the site itself.

Alright sounds fine.
….. Who ever said anything about fanarts? When mx_13 said that he meant that that would be the primary screen like other podcasts do IE pizza party podcast:

I would actually love to hear a podcast of Liche and Loli being weebs.

And now, the official artwork for the KYMCast (yup, it's official) by Calkarot!:

If you want your artwork to be in the podcast, just post it here.

Also, if you have recommendations for the theme song, post it here as well.

Hey i think we should have "guest hosts" so that it isnt the same damn people plus it would freshen things up.

what would make it really awesome would have internet celebrities on the show but honestly KYM isnt that big or well liked. Just being totally honest.

but really awesome idea guys! Thumbs up!

I think you can do some "sorta" Internet celebrities. There are probably a lot of lesser known but semi-popular YouTubers or people who might have time here and there that we know (maybe staff when they have a couple of minutes or even some previous episode actors) who'd love to promote themselves without them having to be paid.

i guess you are right.

who would want to do a bunch a work and not get paid? ahem… mods?

I'll do some looking around for you guys plus i'd be willing to talk to. not to brag but i am really social and something like this would be perfect for someone with my personality. its just hard for something to hold my interest but im just a top memer, not a mod. ( does that really matter?)

If you want i can do research on topics that are relevant. i have some good ideas its just id like to have the OK frim people who are running this before i put my effort in this.

if not its ok im a memer not a cop :)

Yeah sorry about that, I plan to use a different recorder next time because the chat we had sounded MUCH better than that.

OK, I just listened to the entire podcast and I have some things to point out. Please think of this as constructive criticism and not me raining on your parade.

- Always do a Mic Check at the start – This is the stuff of nightmares. Nobody is sitting the same distance to their Mic and nobody has the same equipment, so make sure to spend some time to make sure that everyone can be heard. Even idle chitchat helps in checking the sound levels

- Get a microphone that's not built into the laptop – It doesn't matter if its from Bose or Poundland, as long as it's as far away from spinning fans or tapping on tables it's fine. You may not be able to drown out the sound of pets, family members or the washing machine 2 rooms away but those are usually infrequent and local noises are more of a problem

- Wear headphones at all times – This makes sure that any audio you hear from the co-hosts don't echo back into your microphone

- Have a plan of action / meeting agenda – There were only 5 topics of discussion in the podcast, which is fine, but a lot of the time the subject was derailed. Have a list of things to talk about (with minor notes in case you forget something) to make sure everyone's on the ball.

- Be polite, be efficient – You're going to talk over your co-hosts at some point, let them finish their part before you start yours. If you can't decide on who says what and when, take it in turns to say your part (NON goes first, HeMan goes second etc.) Keep to a structure until everyone's comfortable talking as a group

Alright heres the raw version of the newest podcast. WARNING THE AUDIO IS UNEDITED AND NOT AS GOOD AS IT COULD AND WILL BE, LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK:

also just a question: What should the upload schedule be? Are we going to do one every day or only 2 days a week or what? I need to know this so we can keep a consistent schedule and not a mess of podcasts coming whenever.

I've always wanted to be part of a podcast. These have always interested me, and what better way than with cool people I already sort of know on KYM? As for criticism, I agree with everything Menthol said, especially the thing about having a set schedule.

I would join, but there are many reasons why I can't:

- Only own a native mic.
- My family is in my house at nearly all times except for an hour max on random weekdays.
- The high levels of dysphoria and uncomfortableness I have with my voice.

If I manage to get a better mic someday, find a way to get away from my family or a time when they're away during a podcast, and train my voice to be the way I want it, I might be a guest someday. So basically, it's not likely at all really for quite a while.
