Part of a series on Shen Comix. [View Related Entries]

About

The Color Theory Comic is a short comic drawn by Shen Comix in 2020, in which he shares his feelings about color theory, expressing confusion about how yellow and blue combine to make green. The comic has been wildly used online as an object labeling meme template.

Origin

On April 11th, 2020, Shen uploaded on his Newgrounds[1] and Reddit[2] accounts a comic titled "This… can't be…". In it, he depicts himself reacting to the mixes of the three primary colors; saying "Yeah, that makes sense!" about red and yellow creating orange, "Yeah, I can see that" about red and blue creating purple, and "What the fuck…" about blue and yellow creating green. His Reddit post gained more than 10,000 upvotes in four years.

+ + 11 YEAH, THAT MAKES SENSE! YEAH, I CAN SEE THAT. + SHEN COMIX WHAT THE F---

Spread

The comic spread, especially on Reddit, as an object-labeling exploitable, in which Shen reacts to increasingly hard-to-believe facts and affirmations. For example, on April 14th, 2020, Redditor Skittleman06 made an edit to joke about Mega Man's weaknesses in /r/megaman,[3] gaining over 240 points in four years.

Fun fact: blue was actually considered a shade of green for the vast majority of human history. It being a distinct color is relatively recent, hence why you see things like The Odyssey describing the ocean as "wine dark." Many parts of the world still don't make a clear distinction between the two colors. In Japan for instance, "ao" was historically used to refer to blue and green alike before being limited to blue, with "midori" being created later on as a distinct term for green. However, "ao" is still used to refer to stuff like green grass, green peppers, green apples, and most notoriously, the "go" bulb on a spotlight.

Wikipedia has a whole article about how fucky the blue-green distinction is around the world.
