OK EVERYPONY! I need all your critique and advice! Becaaaaauuuuuse…

I FINISHED MY MOTHERBUCKING COMIC!

Just a bit of setup, I don't think I'm going to continue this storyline, It's just too much time and commitment. Maybe if enough people want to know where this was going, or what the hell the title means I might finish it off as an episode fic, it'd probably take me 2 hours instead of 2 months.

So I think I'm going to chalk this comic down as, for all intents and purposes, a proof of concept. Anyway, I wanna hear what you all think of it, but first here are my thoughts:

+ I'm very happy with the art, the first half of the comic I started over a month ago and I got better and better as I went along. So the first few panels are decidedly more ghetto then the others.

+The backgrounds are serviceable, I have next to no experience doing backgrounds so they don't look great. But they're good enough, you can't see them all that much behind the characters anyway.

+The writing… well let's just say more time went into any given single panel then the script. There aren't any grammatical errors, the characters are pretty much in character, Zecora does a decent job rhyming the whole thing (even if there's a pretty blatant slant-rhyme at one point). It's just… well maybe i've been working on this too long and the novelty's worn off but I'm pretty sure the joke at the end is the most awful thing I've ever punched into a word processor.

And on that note, without further a due I ashamedly present my free time from the past two months. (if the link works)

Here it is.

EDIT: I did just now notice a small error in one of the backgrounds, I guess I could fix it if anyone cares.

At first, I thought this comic was gonna take a dark turn when they mentioned about the sunset. Then I lol'ed at the last few panels.

Try to rhyme that, Zecora.

Well past that point the story does take a slightly darker, more violent turn. (nothing that wouldn't work in the show though) Let's just say it involves a giant pony-eating worm (or wurm) that threatens to destroy Ponyville.

But like I said, there's no way I'm doing the whole thing in comic form, we'd be on season 6 by the time it ended.

If that makes any sense.

A wurm, you say?

Hmm…. (Yeah, I'm a M:tG fan, as well.)

If you're not in the mood for heavy stuff, I urge you to go right past this post. For the rest of you, I have something I'd like to say.
For those who don't know, I hated ponies. I watched the show, and I just didn't get it. I was angry at the fact it had practically taken over this site. I was frustrated that it had become so popular on the internet. I simply couldn't see why this had become such a big thing.
Even after I stopped asking KYMers about it, it continued to stick in the back of my mind. For months. I don't think a day went by without feeling frustration towards it.
And so, just two days ago, I decided to post a topic on Ponychan, asking them to help me understand what was so good about this show. The response was overwhelming. But after many posts and many responses… I finally understand.
-It defies the expectations that frilly girls cartoons always suck.
-It brings back the joy of the golden age of cartoons, when they were fun and not pressured by political correctness.
-It has a strong community that continues to put out new, fresh content all the time
-It allows people to forget about their daily lives, sit back, and enjoy themselves in a fun, colorful show, in a time of such cynicism.
And I've also come to terms with why I don't enjoy it.
Cartoons, in general, sacrifice reason on the altar if it would help a joke or push the story along. But to me, everything must be consistent and make logical sense. I have a hard, grounded type of fiction, and place reason above all else. Cartoons simply aren't made to entertain my mindset. And having not watched cartoons as a kid, I don't feel nostalgic over them. They weren't part of my childhood. I came in with such high expectations, that there was no way the show could live up to them.
I'm going to open up to you guys and admit something I've been hiding: I wanted to be a brony. From the very beginning. I thought it would be fun, and kept trying the show because I wanted to like it.
But I now realize that I was smashing my head into a brick wall. And I've come to terms with the fact that I will never enjoy it.
And I'm OK with that.

Be like me just enjoy the meme not the show itself. I have not seen all the episodes. I have seen a few all the way through but mainly clips of all the shows. The pony meme has some great / funny stuff out there and I have even made a few, even seen some of my stuff on other sites. It's a good feeling to see something you create somewhere else. I actually get the same feeling when I see a commercial I have worked on played on TV or on the internet. I don't really consider myself a brony and I have a love / hate relationship with the community. I love that just about every pic that gets posted gets attention and comments. I hate that some of the comments can be very stupid and if this where other memes or even sites you would get ripped on for such stupidity. I love being able to come here and be able to have a great conversation with some people or laugh at some of the jokes and post funny stuff. I hate when bronies get self righteous and think they are better because they are bronies. I do like putting them in their place though. But in all I like the community here on KYM and on the pony threads.

EDIT: I also have a love/hate feel for some of the cute stuff that gets posted all the time. Yea it's cute but then the comments sound like a bunch of my wife's friends looking at a baby.

But in that sense, very little entertainment actually follows a completely logical and consistent model. Surely, you must like something that isn't 100% consistent in its rules?

I've gotta admit that I started out with FiM just the way Daniel Vazquez is now. I got interested of it only because of all the memes and fanmade content (I found out about it on KYM afterall). I've never been a part of a fandom before, and there was just something interesting about this one, that kinda destroyed the typical "I hate everything." mindset of internet in general.

Love and tolerance… Are we the new damn hippies of the world? But only with ponies as our mind altering drugs? Hah. No wonder Cartman would probably hate us.

I didn't really like the first episodes all that much (of course there were exceptions), and I didn't really get hooked, until Bridle Gossip. But when I started drawing ponies, I got an overwhelming positive response, which I never experienced when drawing anime. That kinda sealed my interest in this community for good…

…Even though a part of it still creeps the hell out of me.

As sort of an artist, the creation driven remix culture behind all this, has always been more important for me than the show itself. That's why I got through the dry season with ease, even though excitement for the new season still triggered the same feeling of excitement I haven't had since I was a kid, and was waiting for christmas.

I also get the same love/hate feeling when seeing all the cute fanart as Daniel. The comments are, well, weird. But I guess it's acceptable since those people haven't been able to express those emotions before in their life without ridicule.

I never go d'awwwww over some piece of fanart. I could've a few rare times, but didn't.

I haven't really d'awwwwd either. I find them cute or amazing work, but in RL never d'awd.
Also, I noticed the bronies are alot like Angry Birds.
Let's look at the Cinematic Trailer
the butterfly/pigs represents a hater.
the eggs represent the show.
and the angry birds represent the bronies.
See what I mean?

There's a brony meetup in Auckland on the 29th during the Armageddon expo.

I'm too much of a closet brony to meet up with those guys. I'll probably stalk them though.

I also get the same love/hate feeling when seeing all the cute fanart as Daniel. The comments are, well, weird. But I guess it’s acceptable since those people haven’t been able to express those emotions before in their life without ridicule.

Some of it is incredibly cute. I'd rather make a snarky comment rather than just go d'awww though.

@Gigatoast

Wurm? Hah hah. I haven't been playing Magic since the Onslaught and Legions sets were brand new. Good times, good times.

Anyways, the comic looks great, and I think you did well with the backgrounds too. It suits the style so well, that I can't really figure out anything to complain about. Good work.

@Karnage

I've gotta admit, there are similarities between the birds and the bronies. Hah.

@burning_phoneix

I think I could've gone to a brony meetup here in Finland, but only if I could've gone with a friend. I don't want to travel long distance alone, to a place I've never been to before, and meet people I don't even know.

And about the cute pics. I too prefer making a witty comment instead of d'awwwing at them.

Who remembers a few weeks back when I mentioned that I had used MLP:FIM in a section of my English exam? Well I got the results back today for that exam, and for that part I got 8 out of 15. Not too bad, but not that great (I'm not that great a writer). But I'm happy with what I got.

I'm not even a native english speaker, and the joke was still obvious.

Well… To be honest, I've always preferred non-fiction over fiction, even as a little kid. I don't watch much TV or movies or read many books. I suppose one or two inconsistencies will bug me, but not ruin the show/movie/book for me. Too many, though, and I simply can't enjoy it. I simply have a different mentality than most of the users here. I tried to like ponies and I didn't. And I feel like I've finally come to terms with that.

It's good to hear you've come to terms with your dislike. I knew that it bothered you, as you have removed and re-added friends of you that were bronies multiple times, in an attempt to forget about MLP. I respect that you tried to accept the show, you don't see that often in non-fans. Too bad it didn't appeal to you, but you can't like everything. Your personality explains a lot about your reason for not liking it.

Just as you, I hate it when things make no sence. I'm the type of person that believes in hard facts. But when I watch tv and stuff, I just forget about it. 90% of what you see on tv is fiction, similar to games and the internet and stuff. So why take it serious? I won't force another to like/dislike something or change his opinion, although I might bring up some arguments if something another person said makes no sence at all, but not everything has to appeal to everyone.

@Gigatoast

I lolled at the orange joke. (In case I missed the explanation, the joke at the end relies on the word "orange" being notorious for not rhyming with any other English word.) All the characters were definitely within character, so it seems to be a clip from an episode, just as you were advertising. I won't toot your horn too much on the art. It's definitely neat art though. I'd like to read what happened at the end. The worm ending confuses me a bit. I have never played Magic: The Gathering, so I may not appreciate it as much as others.
