I have a girlfriend who I compliment all the time. However, there are times when I would also like to receive compliments. Many of my friends are dealing with the same situation: It's always the guy doing the complimenting and never the girl. Am I right to want compliments back or can I not break this social norm? Why is it always the girl receiving the compliments?

It isn't wrong to want compliments.
I give compliments to guys all the time and I'm a girl.
A lot of girls compliment guys.

It might be a cultural thing from where you are from or where you are currently living. 'cause where I'm from in, terms of social interactions, it's nobody really minds where compliments come from and where they are directed towards (unless if they're the resident hardcore socially awkward guy). Compliments and insults. Mostly the latter, though.

If she really doesn't compliment you, it won't hurt to bring your problem up. Who knows? maybe she doesn't really respect you and is faking. Maybe she just never noticed. Regardless, I recommend you talk to her. An ideal relationship should mutual, especially in terms of respect. Don't feel bad in wanting that.

A compliment may not need to be direct and verbal. Make certain you haven't zoned out positive acknowledgement just because you haven't received a direct compliment. But if you've been living in a void of negativity or neutrality were only she matters, I suspect your relationship is quite unhealthy.

That said, you can test the waters by just… putting yourself out there. "What did you think of what I just did?" "How do I look?" etc. Sometimes people just need to be prompted for their thoughts, especially the people who think their thoughts don't matter.

Woman: fuck you you little dick cheapskate, I never was gonna fuck you anyway… oof

Damn, that sucks man. I hope the devs fix that bug on the next update.
