My other statistical posts.

In my post 2 months ago on video game franchises, I found that Pokémon had by far the most entries on KYM. I decided to do a more in-depth study on the franchise and see how many images each Pokémon species has.

All data was retrieved on April 5th (yes, I took a month). I entered each species name as a tag and saw how many images they had (I used "nidoran" for Nidoran♀ and Nidoran♂ since tags don't read the gender symbols). I listed each Pokémon's National Pokédex number (separated into the 7 generations) and their types (only basic forms if other forms have different types). In addition, I made a note if any of them fell into the following categories: starter Pokémon (or in the family of one), legendary/mythical, and playable character in a Super Smash Bros. game.

Here's the full list from most to least images and here it is in National Pokédex order.

Top 10 Pokémon:
[rank]. [generation]-[National Pokédex #]. [species] ([type 1]/[type 2]): [# of tagged images]
*Starter Pokémon and evolved forms; †legendary or mythical Pokémon; ‡playable characters in Super Smash Bros. series

10. 6-654. Braixen (Fire): 824 *
9. 6-700. Sylveon (Fairy): 847
8. 6-658. Greninja (Water/Dark): 919 *‡
7. 1-133. Eevee (Normal): 923
6. 1-150. Mewtwo (Psychic): 1031 †‡
5. 4-428. Lopunny (Normal): 1115
4. 1-6. Charizard (Fire/Flying): 1168 *‡
3. 4-448. Lucario (Fighting/Steel): 1508 ‡
2. 3-282. Gardevoir (Psychic/Fairy): 1615
1. 1-25. Pikachu (Electric): 4815 ‡

All Pokémon:
Mean: 98.12
Median: 44
Standard deviation: 226.80

Generations:
[rank by mean]. Gen. [#], [# of species] ([mean]; [standard deviation])

1. Gen. 1, 151 (172.02; 421.00)
6. Gen. 2, 100 (69.13; 80.23)
5. Gen. 3, 135 (82.84; 164.77)
4. Gen. 4, 107 (85.94; 192.19)
7. Gen. 5, 156 (49.69; 63.37)
2. Gen. 6, 72 (143.14; 202.90)
3. Gen. 7, 86 (91.36; 128.62)

Types by mean:
[rank]. [type], [# of species] ([mean]; [standard deviation])

1. Electric, 48 (190.54; 682.07)
2. Fairy, 47 (155.81; 272.23)
3. Fire, 63 (155.67; 221.14)
4. Psychic, 82 (131.30; 231.15)
5. Dark, 46 (104.02; 162.57)
6. Dragon, 45 (103.27; 100.48)
7. Fighting, 54 (97.74; 209.22)
8. Ghost, 43 (97.14; 91.87)
9. Steel, 47 (93.00; 218.25)
10. Water, 131 (91.85; 137.49)
11. Normal, 109 (85.07; 159.14)
12. Grass, 96 (82.43; 108.79)
13. Flying, 98 (79.47; 141.92)
14. Poison, 66 (67.24; 81.02)
15. Ice, 34 (61.18; 96.45)
16. Ground, 64 (60.67; 72.78)
17. Rock, 60 (43.47; 49.57)
18. Bug, 77 (39.52; 40.24)

Observations and conclusions:
1. With 4815 images, the brand's mascot Pikachu is far and away the top Pokémon. It's the only one with even 2000. In 2nd place, Gardevoir has 1615 images (33.54% of 1st place).

2. Only 6 Pokémon (0.74%) have 1000 images. The top 10% have at least 209 and the top 50% have at least 44.

3. The top type Electric's mean (190.54) is heavily skewed by Pikachu's 4815 score. Without it, its mean would be 92.15, putting it in 9th place between Steel and Water.

4. The top generation 1's mean (172.02) is also skewed by Pikachu. Without it, its mean would be 141.07, narrowly putting it in 2nd place behind generation 6's 143.14.

5. Super Smash Bros. characters, with a mean of 1220.44 and standard deviation of 1338.65, has the highest distribution of any category I looked at.

6. I regret not counting Eevee and the Eeveelutions as a category, but I'll order them here: Eevee (923), Sylveon (847), Glaceon (562), Flareon (550), Umbreon (530), Vaporeon (493), Espeon (446), Jolteon (367), and Leafeon (344). With a mean of 562.44 and standard deviation of 187.52, this becomes the category with the 2nd highest distribution behind SSB.

7. The other categories' means and standard deviations respectively: starter families (246.87; 241.15) and legendary/mythical Pokémon (119.65; 143.05).

Graphs:

Pikachu being top spot doesn't surprise me as he is the mascot of the franchise.

And we all know why Lucario and Gardevior are on the top. (cough)lewds(cough)

I'm curious for which Pokemon has the least tagged images?

I guess I didn't highlight this enough, but I linked this list which has all of them in decreasing order.

I'd say Lumineon if it weren't for the "Lumineon is the most forgetable pokemon" meme so I'll go with Maractus, a pokemon people actually seem to forget exists

Edit: 24 images, huh, to Heatmor's ten. I wonder if I can find lower
Edit2: Zweilous 9
Edit3: Tranquill 7
Edit4: Shieldon ties with 7
Edit5: Before the edit window closes, my final answers are Tranquil and Shieldon with 7. Do I win?

If we discard the species we're pretty much expecting high occurrences of (Slowpoke and Magikarp for example), I see a few things here:

The first is that the amount of media for each pokemon based on its release date is pretty consistent (i.e older gens have more uploads), with the major exception of generation 5. We can treat this as a quantitative answer to the "best generation" problem and finally put it to rest. Its still gen 3 though.

The second is that 6 of the top 10 species are big offenders for uploaded Pokemon smut. As much as I was expecting clips from the anime (see: Snivy, Pikachu, Greninja's occurrences) to skew these stats more than anything else, fanart seems to have had a much bigger impact. I appreciate distributions as much as the next guy, but you might as well sort by "Diives" and "not Diives" instead of generation/typing.

We'll remember this thread when we lock both galleries though :^)

I thought of counting the factors "cute", "cool", and "furry appeal", but they're all subjective.

I know Eglamore asked me to take a dive into the Pokemon sub-entries on April 21st, to try to make some updates. If you do a follow-up, which Pokemon do you think is going to have the largest jump?

Anyone is welcome to help out!
