Did older generations have memes back in their prime?

This may be a dumb question, as the idea of memes isn't restricted to the internet, and the invention of such only blew memes up because of rapid worldwide communication. In fact I may have answered my own question, but I just want other peoples' input on this question.

And yes, the most famous hungarian internet memes were born arround 1999 and the early 2000s and most of them are still strong. If i remember correct those videos and pics were called "internet humor" and their subjects were called "internet stars". Technically country wide jokes/phenomenons which nowadays would be the prime example of a meme.
Thinking about it… memes are subculture jokes/in-jokes which get enough large for the attention of the mainstream… or something…
