Catch me up on the last six years of KYM

last time I was here the holy Trinity of goat-tan, Cheeto, and Robo Jesus was in full swing. Whats been up with this site in the past 6 years? Is it dying? doing well? SSDD?

ps. general updates on everyone's well being would be nice too. Im doing great living humbly. I already lived like a hermit so rona restrictions never really affected me.

Four words:
Welcome to wojak hell.

6 years encompasses my profile’s age. Here’s some events.

If you find the forums are less active than you remember, it’s because they moved to KYM’s Discord server.

The site had a problem where a giant pop up would tell users they have Adblock on, and it showed up on every page, every refresh. The unfortunate staff member who made the announcement has record-breaking downvotes on the op.

Also, contained within these six years, was the Trump presidency, where there were seemingly endless front page posts about him, much to the agitation of the userbase.

Epyc is largely irrelevant at this point, at least in 2022. Now the person with notoriety is what we just call “the pornspammer.” Truly, these are darker times.

Poochyena, who was known to engage in aimless arguments and is considered a contrarian, is banned. The “poochyena” alias is a favorite of the pornspammer, and it’s been used over a hundred times.

The site is politically polarized. The comments are now considered far-right by discord users, and the server is left overall, but more chill in my experience, as there are two politics channels, stupid and serious.

This is like finding a Japanese soilder who never knew the war ended fifty years after the fact, except in reverse…

Uh…

TL:DR the site is much less friendly than it used to be. Political divisiveness which was already present really hit big during the Trump administration. You are way more likely to see discussions revolve around anti-lgbt polices than about the most recent anime, clever new memes, and which pony is best pony.. A lot of older users have since left or deactivated and the sense of community just… isn't there.

Legitimately, happened to view Crashfalcon's wall yesterday [user who has been inactive for like, 7 years, but was semi big in kym's mlp community] and wow,. Nothing about that experience feels reflective of the site today. Like, in the past, a request for "everyone's well being" would actually be answered by community members on behalf of others. Now it's little more than a "present" vote.

Image galleries like reaction images, mlp, hentai quotes that used to be constantly filled with new images are barely touched. A great portion of images uploaded by users are Political in nature, or at least about real world events. Uh, there is also the KYM collector bot that automatically uploads some reddit posts. They are of variable quality, and definitely have a lot of Political images given it hits politicalcompassmemes.

uh… I definitely could answer some specific questions if desired.

Most of the mod team of the time (Captain Blubber, madcat, Tomberry, Holycrapitsbob, Verbose, RandomMan, BsoD, Loli, Random 21, Mom Rivers, Deltamelon, muffinlicous) has since become extremely inactive or deactivated. James and Brad, long time staff members have both left.

If you are wanting a sense of the old KYM community, the discord is about the closest place it still exists. It isn't the same, but several of the older users that just wanna hang out with friends they made of the site are more likely to be there than here.

The discord server is like how the site used to be? I don't want to poison the place, but I'll try lurking again.

Anyway, the site changed, like a lot places changed in the past few years. I was looking at some of bookmarked images greentext and comics and most of them were years ago.

The focus just shifted, I guess.

See, from my perspective, even given everything that's happen, I would still consider KYM to be one of the better sites on the [current year] Internet. Twitter and Reddit are just absolute dumpster fires, and I haven't used either site regularly in years.

KYM has the ideal image system, where topics like individual games, characters, memes, etc. all get their own pages and image galleries. This is honestly a format I wish other sites would learn from, as its far harder to find content for certain things on other sites like Twitter or even sites like FunnyJunk.

I mean, modern KYM is in no way perfect (I think I have voiced my criticisms of this site's current userbase a couple times by now), but at the same time, this whole social unrest may very well just be a sign of the times, where everything has to be politically charged for some God-forsaken reason.

So for what it's worth, I just try to make the most of what I've got, and go from there. Every now and then, I do wonder if the political and civil unrest present on the Internet today is even unreversable, and even then, what could be the thing that undoes it?

I'm starting to think I missed out on the best stuff site had to offer.

Anyway 4chan thought that posting a lot of shitty Wojak edits here would annoy us. It did.

Plenty of generally right leaning users would come and go as they got banned after 2 weeks for posting unsavoury political memes. Eunice Tremble who probably survived the longest out of them all was kicked out merely day or two ago.

Main page for a year turned into buzzfeed memes listicles and Tik tok trends. It got somewhat better since.

New page layout was introduced and a lot of people disliked it. I think you could still change back to the classic layout in profile settings.

Not gonna lie, site's kinda getting barren community-wise. Blame the monopolization of social networks I suppose.

Blame the lack of fucks from those who are supposed to maintain this site. I remember one of the mods saying they care more about documenting memes than about well-being of the users.

Been lurking this site since 2011 and WOW this site has changed a lot but worse IMO

- Getting too political
- Wojak hell
- Notable users deactivated or banned (I kinda miss Paper Jam Dipper tbh)
- Stupid ass "new" page layout design
- Mods became too lazy or straight up dumbasses

The sense of community is dying here and it shows with so many deactivated, banned, and simply abandoned old users I've seen for the past few years. At least the Discord channel still holding its spirit somewhat.

I've been many ups and downs throughout my life and I admit I still keep coming back to KYM mostly because the community here is more tolerable than all social media sites and the best place to keep up with the latest memes and trends because I use the Internet way less frequently than I was before.

the holy Trinity of goat-tan, Cheeto, and Robo Jesus

The modern web has not been kind to KYM. 95% of this user era has moved on from due to ownership neglect and, like, being adults now. You can tell because oldfags occasionaly come back to IRC Discord only to be active once a month due to spouses and jobs.

The "community" which replaced it are users who are either too young to or refuse to interact with other (better) social media platforms, which means they're sorta just… angry at everything? You'll find sizeable user cliques who make their crusade about:

  • Site layout change
  • Frontpage/editorial content
  • Old moderation
  • New moderation
  • Admins when they do anything
  • Admins because they dont do anything
  • Literally gamergate in 2022??
  • Too much politics, not enough lewd fanart
  • Too much lewd fanart, not enough politics
  • Notable users being banned
  • Notable users not being banned fast enough
  • That kym is a haven for the alt-right
  • That kym is a haven for the radical left
  • There are too many bot/alt accounts on kym
  • Wait no don't ban my alt accounts I'm friendly (this actually happened)

I wish I could show you the DMs the mods get these days, but you'll have to surf the site to see for yourself. The discourse is now as fascinating as ever, but only if you're down to see what Twitter would look like if it was all teenagers on amphetamines. Oh, and everyone's account looks like this now:

there are people who think this website is left wing?

Somehow, we’ve stagnated to the point where we cannot even experience atrophy
Aside from deadbeat users who are lost at one point or another, you’ll find nothing much different here than from what you saw years ago

Steve wrote:

It's a common claim; a partisan from one wing will join up, complain about a site becoming too much the other wing and reccomend a change if not outright crack down.

It happens everywhere, often without the site being partisan at all. Usually its a left winger doing it but you get the ocasional rightoid trying it, I think the discrepency is because the left have more success stories; more reason to believe the site owner/moderation staff will actually conceed to thier suggestions.

BECAUSE EVENTUALLY THEY WERE DISCOURAGED FROM USING BY MULTIPLE THREATS OF LOCKING SAID GALLERIES, WHICH ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO THE HENTAI QUOTES GALLERY FOR A WHILE! WHAT DID YOU EXPECT!

At least the fanart and softcore part of the website remains unchanged as you can see here

while not being relevant anymore, epyc really sped up the sites demise. making forum users really unhappy, killing irc, getting shittier communitys eyes on us like ED and /qa/.
while i know the homogenization of the internet killed a lot aswell, i do miss my teen years here. the sense of small community on the internet is on lufe support with discord, but honestly even our discord is too big for me to use.

Well, for a while, this site came off as centrist. Mainly of the “both sides bad” variety. Both leftists and the alt-right were despised. Or so it seemed.

So; you mean right wing ?

>right wing-left wing

While we can complain about how the site has gone downhill, I personally think it was even worse a short few years ago. Centrist? It was /pol/. Some images are now deleted, but I don't know, go to some Ben Garrison comics and see that they're in the triple digits of upvotes with a graveyard of users.

Terrible politics, and it was facebook tier content.

If I go to another site and KYM and the site is mentioned? Unfortunately, centrist is not the word that would be used. There's a source of hope at least, that trending images have less soyjaks and more fanart/softcore porn, gifs and greentexts, so that's better?

>Doeoeod: refuse to interact with other (better) social media platforms, which means they're sorta just… angry at everything?

This place is still good for getting images more easily than with imgur? But, yeah, venting is a big part of it.

The site's getting better, or at least it's returning to the old degeneracy.

You got Elden Ring, a worryingly high amount of furry fanart, Clowns and Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. Better then when Eunice Tremble's Pro-Russia images showed up in the trending images, that sucked.

There's a chance of being called a "fencesitter" from both sides on this site, probably.

Also, I feel that fetish art being upload on this site is still far, far better than political shit being pumped out all the time.
