Politicians are trying to censor the internet.

So, the PROTECT IP (Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property) act just made it through the Judiciary Committee. This would give the government the power to censor websites without due process. (In other words, without a court order. Specifically, they would be able to censor anything anytime they want, with nobody stopping them.) Fortunately, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) has put a hold on the bill.

Here is the full text of the bill

This is serious business. It didn't die in committee, and soon enough, it will come to a vote, and if it gets through the Senate, it will definitely get through the House, and then it's cake for it to become law. SO E-MAIL YOUR SENATORS, TELL THEM NO!

Over here in the UK we've been having the Super Injunction fiasco, where an anonymous footballer tried to sue Twitter because 2 thirds of the population had found out that he had an affair, which he then covered up with a super injunction, that means that papers can't even report the fact that he's had one granted. A front bencher has had the idea to regulate twitter, but I don't think it'll happen.

4chan is fucking screwed….
If 4chan is screwed….
Then there won't be nearly as much new memes….
But we'll…..

Sen. Ron Wyden will get charges pressed on him, he spoke way too soon. You see people can press charges on politicians, and while the judicial branch decided wither or not they are innocent, they lose their political power. All it takes is one corporation to simultaneously press charges on all the Opposing Senators at once to win this.

Well, the way I see it, we have two options:

1: Speak out and email your governors.

2: Go in like Anonymous and bombard the Chamber of Commerce website with LOICs.

This is so ridiculous. Censoring the Internet will have serious consequences. I bet the only reason they are doing this is to get rid of Wikileaks. If they get control of regulating the Internet, we won't know what's going on in our own country. Anonymous better think of something better than just taking down the CoC for a short time.

We can't just let them infringe our rights of free speech. We can't just let them do what they want. They may run the country, but they can't run our lives. If we don't do something about this, who knows what else they will do? I know this shouldn't be a big deal and people freaking out over this. But this is what we do; this is our life. I know some people do things outside, but the people on the Internet only have the Internet. I don't know about you guys, but we can't sit idly by and let this bill ruin the internet.

What he said…

This is pretty bad, it not only allows the government to censor sites, but also allows corporations to press charges on websites for copyrights, and essentially report, block them themselves by using the government.

Over see servers can be charged as well, block, and the owner in the US will be held accountable.

In all honesty, they can't censor a site unless its infringing on copyright issues, essentially all you can do once this is past is Google things that don't exist.

Of course because I am lazy, I only read the first two pages.

blurgh, Ryan Giggs. Dickhead.

Super Injunction's, despite their supposedly serious ability, don't seem to have worked. At all. All that seem to happen is that you make the super injunction, then everyone finds out, and then you're in even worse trouble.

You should all go and sue them for repression of freedom of speech or something. Whatever it takes to stop them.

Two words: PATRIOT Act.

That didn't get stopped in court. In fact, it just got renewed.

This is just like the law they were trying to push through to overly sensor video games, which would have killed the industry. Even if it does make it through, there'll be lawsuits up the ass. However, I do agree that this is a serious matter of politicians trying to look good for the parent by banning the Evils of the interwebs. I swear, moronic parents will one day ruin everything for everyone because they were too stupid to monitor they're own children's behaviour.

We've all got to fight this.
I've been worried about America lately. It seems a bit Orwellian.
In 1984, there is always some mysterious war going on, requiring undue powers to the government and obedience of the masses.
In America, we have mysterious terrorists who haven't struck for a while, but everyone's convinced they will attack, requiring undue powers to the government and obedience of the masses.
Don't let them take our free speech! America likes to believe we're the leader of the Free World; don't take our freedom!

Government has control of all internets
Government lets us know only what they want to let us know
Leads to propaganda

Didn't we already get rid of government propaganda?

Good god…

At least we have several roadblocks for this, includeing a wall that is Operation Payback, but we are going to have to get this shit viral to get everyones attention.

We need to keep this bill from exiting the Senate.

Implying its not the governments responsibility to take care of their kids.

All things Obama should be doing for me right now.

The right in America is to blame. They claim that they're standing up for free speech and average Joe's rights but they're not. They're standing up for big business and all they want is power and money. Blaaaaaaaaaaaaam this piece of crap!

Yeah and those damn liberals(the majority) aren't voting either, lazy liberals.

They do realized how bad of an idea this is? To censor the internet would cause endless amounts of retaliation, endless riots of countless anons, and Rickrolls and Nyan spam of epic proportion.

Well, they don't give 9/11 workers, volunteers healthcare because they might be terrorists.

So, yeah I think they will do this because they it makes everyone mad.

Yep, it does has something to do with a totalitarian future though.

I don't mind a totalitarian government, I just want them to do something right, anything, I mean anything at all.

And to be honest, I don't think they could hold a totalitarian government together, they are too stupid corrupt, and would rather spend the money on banks.

This is why we should elect Donald Trump, i don't understand why people are so afraid of him.

He's just a rich celebrity. Did he study politics in college? No. He studied economics. He may help the country with our money managing problems, but deciding on bills, foreign affairs, war; he knows nothing. It's not that we're afraid. He just isn't qualified.

I agree Sarah Palin is better.
