We all know about musical genres like vaporwave, that are mostly created by the Internet and have a somewhat ironic following. After some discussion about the topic with some users, I decided to create this thread in order to help in the research of those genres and discuss which ones should get an entry.

Here's a list of some genres I qualified as meme genres. The list is up to discussion as I hesitate with some of the entries there.

Now, some genres:

  • Witch House: From Wikipedia "Tan occult-themed dark electronic music genre and visual aesthetic that emerged in the late 2000, heavily influenced by chopped and screwed hip-hop soundscapes, and industrial and noise experimentation, and features use of synthesizers, drum machines, obscure samples, droning repetition and heavily altered, ethereal, indiscernible vocals." The genre was pretty active some years ago on /mu/, but now seems to be dead, though it has a dedicated subreddit that is still active.

Witch House Subreddit
Ocean Grunge Subreddit

how to make Ocean Grunge, 42,000 views

How to make Witch House, 85,000 views

I'd prefer Ocean Grunge to have a subsection of the vaporwave and sea punk entries since i don't think it really has enough spread on it's own but if someone wants to make it, then it isn't really an issue

i do think witch house deserves an entry though since it seems to have spread

I didn't know there was a made up music genre to go with every made up sexual orientation on tumblr.

Would it not be easier to read through/learn about these things if they were all on one "internet music genre" page? Do they all have enough background info/etc to justify their own entries? Maybe the bigger ones that can stand on their own get entries, the others get a summary paragraph and video example on a general internet music genre entry.

Sometimes is better to not go down the rabbit's holeā€¦

Originaly I though on that, but at the end I prefered using the entry category option. We tend to discard making hub entries on some topics because the galleries would be a total chaos (see Anime, Reaction Images or Tumblr's galleries to see some examples). The option is still there, and the entry may be created, but first we would need more genres imo.

This page got featured after 4 posts? It must be a really good thread. Also, what exactly is the difference between a genre and a meme genre?

It was featured so that even after a month, (when a thread normally gets autolocked) research can continue

Meme genres are usually genres that usually only have a significant presence on Tumblr or the internet, as well as most of them having their own "aesthetic" to them (such as "vaporwave" being associated with a dystopian future dominated by commercials, "ocean grunge" with underwater ocean kingdoms, etc). Occasionally they might break into the mainstream/pop culture, but they rarely, if ever, do.

I asked a forum mod to feature it so it didn't get locked and we could continue the research.

Basically, a meme genre is one created on the Internet, with an ironic following and that mostly are used as satire of corporate and consumerist culture and critique to some mainstream genres (for example Vaporwave satirises mainstream EDM)

Threads about meme research often get featured so the thread doesn't get locked if something new needs to be reported. This is standard procedure

Does Caravan Palace's music count as a meme genre?

Well, it seems to be Electro Swing, and I putted it as Meme Genre. I would appreciate feedback on this and other genres included on the list as I have doubts about some of them (mostly Nightcore, Meme Rap, Electro Swing and Chiptune)

Ok, I created an entry for Witch House and I'll need help on the History section and finding singers or groups from the genre. From what I've seen, Crystal Castles, Grimes and Salem are considered part of this genre, but IO have my doubts on Grimes. You are free to request editorship or post here info.

Along with Bottom and 3kole, we've analyzed The Scientist's list to decide which genres should get entries and which ones aren't big enough:

Meme Genres (DIY Internet communities), Musical Concepts, or Brief Media
Hyped movements:

Mashups
Hauntology: Burial, an artist from this genre, seems huge. But not big enough to warrant entry.
New Rave: Pretty old, seems it hasn't broken through.
Hypnagogic Pop: Heavily related to Vaporwave, another 80's nostalgia genre. Put it in the vaporwave entry.
Chillwave: Must
Lolicore: Maybe. Low priority. Put as section on nightcore for now.
Crabcore
Indie Beach: Too niche
Witch House
Seapunk
Vaporwave

Future Funk : Must
Ocean Grunge: Maybe. Low priority. Put as section on vaporwave for now.
Cloud Rap: Must
Meme Rap
Synthwave: MUST
Horror Synth: Niche. Maybe put as section in synthwave
Bubblegum Bass (aka PC Music)

Fandom Scenes

Touhou: Maybe. Ask 2hou experts.
Doujin Music: Maybe. Ask mona.
Denpa: Maybe. Ask mona.
Wizard Rock: Add in Harry Potter.
Time Lord Rock: Add in Dr Who.
Brony Music: Maybe. Put as Brony section.

Newer Music Genres (mostly EDM)

Electro Swing
Wonky (initially AquaCrunk): Maybe
Purple Sound: Maybe
Glitch Hop: Yes.
Extratone: Yes.
Bassline: 2niche2Bbig
Uk Funky: 2niche
UK Bass: UK isn't a draw
Alternative R&B: Maybe.

Extra

Scene: Yes
Geek Rock: Maybe.
Lofi Hip Hop: MUST
Hardvapour: Maybe. In vaporwave entry.
Death Metal / Black Metal: Maybe
UK Garage: Maybe
K-Pop: MUST. 21 is scared of doing it alone please help him.

Sorted by priority, it looks like this:

  • K-Pop
  • Synthwave
  • Chillwave (may or not merge with Synthwave)
  • Future Funk
  • Cloud Rap
  • Lofi Hip Hop
  • Scene
  • Glitch Hop
  • Extratone
