It has since been widely mocked and parodied online. Google Trends suggests it was first rediscovered in 2011, but didn't really become a meme until late 2016 and 2017. It has appeared on such places as 4chan, Reddit, and ironic meme pages. In some cases, edits and parodies are mistaken for original cartoons and posted to be mocked themselves.
Like many memes these days, this has also become political and a template for representing various ideologies and factions.
At some point, Colossill, a Black Lives Matter group with a Twitter and Instagram account, posted their own version of the cartoon which inspired parodies alongside the original. I can't find the original source, but this is it:
