[Suggest Ideas] Increased moderation on new members to prevent spam

Dear KYM community.

I've had an concept, and as rude as this idea sounds, I'm going to write up a strict ruleset and approval that I believe new members should be forced into in order to prevent advertising accounts and spam threads from new members, I believe new members need to have some rights stripped from them until they redeem themselves.

This would be called the "newcomer" rank. A user under this rank cannot:

-Post in Riff-Raff

-Make articles or topics

-Upload a profile image

-Can be banned from any suspension on this rank

-Has a 10 min hour cooldown before they can post another reply, image, or comment

-Link videos, images, or URLS, this includes non-embed and plain text format. You also cannot use textile features

-Give users karma

And know you're thinking "this is utter bullshit!". If so, calm down. The way to remove this ranking is very easy:

-You must be active for more than a week

-You must get at-least +25 karma from other users

-You must not have been suspend, banned, reported, or sent a mod warning for a month.

Also, many new features should be in-place to prevent so:

-Following 5 users is a must for creating an account, now

-A Captcha must be entered for every forum post, image upload, comment, or article edit made

-Getting suspended, warned, or banned sends you back to the newcomer rank, you must then re-gain it.

-A mod must approve your change of rank, and mods therefore can dictate your rank by your behavior on the forums.

-A posts must now be in proper grammar, punctuation, and to be not written by a twelve-year-old fanfic writer. A warning will be received for poor English.

Yours gladly ~Filler

Thats a horrible idea. A week is way too long and will drive new users away. Some new users are really good at starting a good entry on their first tries, well with your idea bye bye to that.
And you want them to not even/barely post? Then why would they bother stay? There would be no way to connect to the community and talk to people!

Finally Forcing people to have good grammar alienates users who are from different countrys and/or were raised differently but nah, this sites gotta keep 12 year olds out cuz they're duuuumb.
See how this doesn't work and will hopr never happen? Yea.

Banning spam accounts it's not such a big deal, so I won't see why this would help the community. And considering how those rules are too strict, and even unfair for people who joins to the site, I think I'll have to stand against them.

Commenting two points:

Getting suspended, warned, or banned sends you back to the newcomer rank, you must then re-gain it.

So, if someone gets joke-suspended on RR, would lose all its privileges?

A posts must now be in proper grammar, punctuation, and to be not written by a twelve-year-old fanfic writer. A warning will be received for poor English.

As NON said, not everyone has english as native language, so this would create an unfair segregation.

-Post in Riff-Raff

How does this prevent spam?

-Make articles or topics

No. Many of our most viewed and confirmed entries have been created by brand new users. Spam entries and topics can be deleted in half a minute. This will only hurt the site.

-Upload a profile image

How will this change anything at all? How does this prevent spam?

-Can be banned from any suspension on this rank

This sounds really unfair. If someone makes a slipup and gets suspended they deserve a second chance.

-Has a 10 min hour cooldown before they can post another reply, image, or comment

10 minutes and an hour are 2 different things. I've seen spam accounts that post a thread, do nothing for 45 minutes and longer, and then post another to bypass such a 10 minute cooldown. This just seems like a pointless addition and timewasting for new users. If you're saying an hour cooldown this is just silly.

-Link videos, images, or URLS, this includes non-embed and plain text format. You also cannot use textile features

I can understand URLs slightly, but I've never seen a spam account post an image, first with most spam accounts aren't coded to post in textile, they are coded to post in BBCode. Mods with comment powers can just delete the comment and ban the user so overall this is pointless.

-Give users karma

I can sort of understand this, but this will frustrating and scare away new users which shouldn't be our main goal of the site.

-You must be active for more than a week

Pointless and will scare away new users.

-You must get at-least +25 karma from other users

"If the community doesn't like you, you will get punished for it by being forced to go through strict unnecessary moderation." Good logic.

-You must not have been suspend, banned, reported, or sent a mod warning for a month.
suspend, banned, reported

Isn't being suspended and banned the same thing in this new set of rule? Also if someone were to send some bullshit report, that automatically makes them ineligible for removing this unrighteously for a whole month? That is strange.

-A Captcha must be entered for every forum post, image upload, comment, or article edit made

That sounds terrible and unneeded.

-Getting suspended, warned, or banned sends you back to the newcomer rank, you must then re-gain it.

"If anyone makes any mistakes ever they will be punished harshly." This all seems very unneeded, especially for something like a warning. Also if you're getting banned it's expected you aren't returning.

-A mod must approve your change of rank, and mods therefore can dictate your rank by your behavior on the forums.

Many users already cry mod abuse, this would only increase tension of mods and users.

-A posts must now be in proper grammar, punctuation, and to be not written by a twelve-year-old fanfic writer. A warning will be received for poor English.

"Lets punish everyone who lives in another country or simply don't know English perfectly because they are all just 12 year old fanfic writers!"

Also

10 min hour
You must not have been suspend, banned, reported

You don't have perfect English yourself.

Yours gladly ~Filler

All this would do is scare off new users, increase moderation tension, and change nothing about spam.

-A posts must now be in proper grammar, punctuation, and to be not written by a twelve-year-old fanfic writer. A warning will be received for poor English.

>comma instead of a period
>lists lacking parallelism
>incorrect colon use
>constantly forgetting dots
>"an concept"
>"min hour"
>"have been suspend"
>"URLS"
>"to be not written"

Other than that pretty much all your ideas are bad, can't really sugar coat that.

What if members signing up had to write some kind of self-description, and wait for approval from a forum moderator? That'd be pretty effective in preventing spam IMO.

There is enough active user-moderators to Zerg Rush any spam account that makes itself known within 30 minutes.

All the suggestions you made will basically turn KYM into an elitist hive of oldfags that hardly lets any new blood in. Not prevent spam.
