Who is your most hated protagonist in media?

You should've have asked that question…
Yes, I am aware that Evangelion is supposed to be a deconstruction, and yes I am aware of what Shinji is going through in Evangelion, but that still doesn't make him compelling to me. He just felt way too whiny for me, even for a guy with depression.
I'd also add Asuka in this, but I count her as a secondary character.

Kirito.

A thousand times this.

Well, that's to answer the question who is my most hated protagonist.

Now, if we're talking about protagonists who are unlikeable cunts (protagonists who make you question if they're really the protagonist), there's this little-known Canadian Sci-Fi series called Lexx.

Here are the protagonists:

Imagine the Naruto-Sakura-Sasuke dynamic but with the unlikeability factor turned up to five and throw in the disembodied head of a menstruating C3PO. The most likeable character is Stanley Tweedle himself and he's traitorous human garbage. They exist in a universe that out-grimdarks Warhammer and the whole show is a miserable experience.

But that's more or less the whole point. Even though they're unlikeable shits, they're supposed to be, so I can't hate them more than generic anime protagonist #3.

Damn it. Someone mentioned Shinji.
While I don't hate her a whole lot, Usagi.
She's too much of a crybaby and needs to be constantly reminded of how strong she is. Bitch, you're Sailor fucking Moon, Neo Queen Serenity. You can bring people back from the dead! I know that friendship and love play a huge part in Sailor Moon, but God, she breaks down so often.
Another is Ash. You dumbass piece of shit, letting go of your stronger Pokémon and losing the fucking league. Fucking writers, it's been 20 years.

I know that these two are very easy targets and this is beating a totally decomposed horse even further into the ground. However, I have to ask what the hell Stephanie Meyer was thinking when she was writing these characters. Edward's behavior shows all the typical signs of an abusive boyfriend. He does not eat humans but he sure could not care less if others do. Bella shows no signs of concern for innocent people that get killed by vampires (unless it is someone she knows of course). She could not care less about all the crap she puts others such as her father through. In the hands of an author who knows what they hell they are doing, these two would be the villains or at the very least anti-heroes bordering on villain. But for some reason the audience is supposed to think of them as heroes.

Mahiro Yasaka, from Haiyore! Nyaruko-san.

The mc of this series has a cute white haired girl (who's also a lovecraftian space horror, but she doesn't always have to be) who literally wants his dick. Constantly.

He responds by stabbing her in the head with a fork.

I actually dropped the show because of that. I understand the chaste hero trope, or how some people don't like certain kinds of women. But cmon… He's also not that interesting of a character either, just your standard shonen protagonist in high school.

Probably modern Timmy Turner. The Fairly Odd Parents was one of my favorite childhood shows, but ever since the introduction of Poof, the show has taken a nosedive. Timmy was a jerk in the earlier seasons, yeah, but he's been Flanderized and it's made the show unwatchable.

Wish it had ended years ago, honestly.

TVTropes has an interesting interpretation, actually.

"Timmy's Jerkass behavior in season 5 may have been caused by the episode "It's Wishful Life" where he finds out that the world was better without him and everyone didn't care about him. He must have felt hurt and humiliated, so he began acting like a Jerkass towards his godparents and friends out of anger from knowing that they don't care about him at all and wants revenge against them."

Jesus Christ I hate this guy. He's as shallow as can get and gets little to no development whatsoever. The best "development" he gets is getting edgy and wanting to kill all the Titans.

I don't understand the fame AOT gets at all. It's horrible in my eyes.

Pretty sure Stephanie Meyer gets a hard-on from clearly abusive relationships, as evident in The Host, and I think Adam describes it perfectly

Personally for me, it's pretty much any generic YA main girl, because they are either -
• Super special Mary Sue who is the chosen one and pretty much perfect at everything
• Literally has to be babysat or she royally fucks something up in 5 minutes if left alone

(Excluding Katniss from the books because she actually did shit without a prophecy or magic boyfriend)

Ken Izumi: Also known as Chargeman Ken, is my least favorite protagonist in media. He is supposed to be a role-model superhero, but despite his more or less nonexistant personality, he makes extremely poor decisions when resolving problems, mostly due to the short running time of the episodes.

Roy(FE6): Let's see he has the most generic personality from any lords of the series and his stats along with his late promotion makes him a dead weight almost the entire game.
Drake(Drake of the 99 Dragons): He is what a 10 year old thinks what cool an assassin acts and looks.

Frankly I never really liked Spongebob (The Character, not the show in general) as he was more annoying than funny, however there were still some moments that were generally funny though. I guess that was the the point however.

Show was funny though.

Also Keith from Voltron: Legendary Defender

He's not only boring with not much of a defining personality compared to the other more interesting characters, but he's that guy in every action anime with the "cool hairstyle" and leather jacket that acts stoic and thinks he can take on the fucking evil conqueror of hundreds of planets/galaxies that has been ruling for 10,000 years all by himself. Not to mention his "I can do it myself" attitude has caused unnecessary conflict that resulted in the others having to save his punk red ass.

Maybe the other reason why I don't like him is that he's the kind of character I would always develop a crush for when I was a stupid 8-year-old

Also whoever wrote the image captions on his wiki page is a fucking champion

Liu Kang from Mortal Kombat

When I was younger, I always believed the series' main story was centered around Subzero and Scorpion or Raiden and Shao Kahn. Understandable right, clearly the cool looking ninjas or the god of thunder would make for badass fighting game protags. until the age of 12, I thought Liu was a side character. When MK9 rolled around, and I found out he was the stories focus of the previous game (and sort off in 9 itself). I fucking laughed. Not Scorpion, Subzero, Raiden, or Johnny fucking Cage…but…him? A fucking Bruce Lee knockoff!? XD

HE DOESN'T STAND OUT!

Compared to other fighting game protags like Ryu, Kyo, Sol, or hell even Siegfried. He's white bread. He bitches and moans, has a flat personality, and overall was just a bad choice for the main character. Even in his own game, he's just lacks…charm. When you think of MK, whose the first character to come to your head?

All the Farscape characters seem to regularly betray each other. I found it most annoying with Rygel.

To be fair tho…there's a reason Liu KANG is no longer the protagonist….in fact he's pretty much turning into a MAIN antagonist

Yeah I know, Cassie is the new main who I find to be more fun and interesting as the a main character of the series. Kinda fits alot better too (imo). If I remember correctly, aren't Liu and Katana (another character I don't like) the rulers of Outword now?

Pretty much. The ending of X makes as both Liu and Kitana are the new rulers.

Due to some recent happenings in the AOT manga, I'm starting to agree with you on that last part.

Well, in my opinion the characters that i dont like too much are:
-Billy from the grim adventures of billy and mandy (in later seasons), well in the early seasons he was sometimes unlikeable, in the last season was an annoying jackass, with his horrible laugh all the time and his stupidity up to eleven. Doesnt help that he was in every commercial of CN at the time like Fred (especially in Latin America)
-Timmy (again) and Cosmo from the fairly oddparents, since the 4 or 5 season onwards, they become an assholes and dorkbags in every time. Even they were jerks with everybody (even with Crocker).
-Johnny Test…………………………..no comments.
- Patrick and Mr. Krabs during the time that spongebob was in his Dark Age.
There are more, but this are the most that i hate.

Well he later become a co-protagonist with shaggy and scooby in later series until his disappearance.

I'll just throw in Milla Jovovich's character from the Resident Evil movies, Alice. Nothing really "wrong" about the character except for the fact that she's the LITERAL definition of a Mary Sue. Just hear me out, she starts off fine in the first movie which is confirmed to be a "prequel" to the Resident Evil games (guess Capcom didn't tell this guy that they were making a legit Resident Evil prequel game.) then things go completely screwy in the sequel as you can't make two prequels to Resident Evil but they don't want to get rid of Milla Jovovich so they throw her into the story of the Resident Evil games all of the sudden.

But at the same time they introduce the main characters of the game that Resident Evil Apocalypse is based off of….but Alice is still the main character so they're just kind of side characters. Also now, Alice is the chosen one and is able to get super powers from a zombie virus (said to be the only one in the world that can bond with the zombie virus.) and spends the next 90 minutes saving Jill Valentine and Carlos in several situations that they suddenly become useless in. Gets to the point where it goes full on fanfic turned movie when Jill Valentine says the line "I'm good, but I'm not THAT good." because Alice has powers and Jill is nothing more than a cheerleader here and then get this, Carlos falls in love with Alice (not Jill like he's supposed to in the game).

To top off the Mary Sue fanficness the big bad monster Nemesis from the Resident Evil games? The thing that mercilessly hunts down Jill and Carlos in the appropriately titled Resident Evil Nemesis? Yeah, turns out in the movie Nemesis is Alice's friend from the original movie and after a poorly choreographed fist fight he's able to remember how he was great friends with Alice AND SACRIFICES HIS LIFE TO SAVE HER!

So let's tally it up.
1. Original character being the chosen one by being the only person to ever get SUPER POWERS from a ZOMBIE virus.
2. Has iconic characters from the Resident Evil games such as Jill Valentine, Claire and Chris Redfield and even Leon Kennedy kissing her ass and needing her to rescue them because they suddenly become useless when she gets into an action scene.
3. Has other characters from the games professing their love for her.
4. Ends up getting the most fearsome, bloodthirsty monster from the games to sacrifice himself to save her life.
5. And even gets the main antagonist, Albert Wesker to come running to her as he realizes she's the only person who can saaaaave the world.

A poorly written legitimate Mary Sue. There are a lot of characters in this thread that seem a lot worse but in the end, a legitimate definition of a Mary Sue is definitely my most hated protagonist in a work of fiction.

However I also vote for Kirito.

Natsu and Lucy from Fairy Tail

This passage I found on myanimelist sums it up nicely.

I will start off with the main character Natsu who is to me one of the worst MC's in anime ever. He never develops, there is no challenge for him, he doesn't have any conflicts with how he does things its just 'I'll beat the crap out of you' no matter how evil that person is, even if they kill someone he will still treat it more like a sparring match rather than him losing control and losing himself in the process of it, if he's always going to be this guy who doesn't think and just swings away then its going to get really boring really fast. He doesn't so much get stronger but rather uses the power of friendship after making a speech and wins.

Lucy is another character I just could not handle because she was just fanservice and a plot device, she didn't get stronger each time, she just gets caught in a messy situation, screams a bit, summons a spirit and that's it, her character seems to be a key for the arc to go through but apart from that she is utterly useless.

While these two are debatable, I still have negative responses toward them, and they are from the same show.

Sparky mainly counts as a protagonist as he supposed to be helping Timmy, but he fails miserably and I do mean miserably. Not to mention, continuity errors happened in season 9 just as Sparky first appeared. Of course, fans of Fairly Oddparents hated Sparky and Sparky was only in Season 9 and no other seasons.

Chloe does have it's fans, but she wasn't popular at the first episode of Season 10. She winds up being a Mary Sue and she is forced to share Timmy's fairies as the co-protagonist.

She's also the archetypal SyFy channel female protagonist. You know the kind who's fighting style involves jumping 30ft, doing double back flips and splits mid air for no reason and shooting two enemies at once without looking all while the camera is zoomed in on their tight leather covered ass.

The most overhyped character ever printed in magic history. I swear to Karns silver testicals Wizards loves to put this character on a pedastal for nothing but profit
1. he's generally boring as fuck, nothing interesting comes from him besides some of his cards being ok
2. He's a blue mage so automatic degenerate
3.He is a mary sue that is the epitome of wizards shit writing
4. The amount of exposure wizards gives him is grinding me the wrong way
