Super Mario animated movie in production at Illumination, Shigeru Miyamoto to act as co-producer

And I'll just repost something I already said elsewhere:

And before people complain “but why the damn studio that made Minions?” remember Mario+Rabbids. People thought it sounded stupid at first because of the reputation the rabbids have (people often say rabbids are to gaming what minions are to movies), but it turned out actually great in the end. With Nintendo overseeing the project I’m pretty sure they’re gonna make certain Illumination doesn’t fuck this up.

Takashi Mochizuki- Nintendo open to adapt more of their video game franchises to the big screen if the Mario movie does well.

It's hard to really determine how I feel about such a thing.

On the one hand, Illumination is not a bad animation studio by any means, and they are gonna be overseen by Shigi which hopefully means there should be some semblance of direction that Nintendo can agree on.

On the other hand, Mario is often portrayed as such a non-character in his own games. He rarely shows any form of emotional expression that the player doesn't directly dictate which makes him kind of a blank slate if he had to stand on his own merits.
Also Mario generally doesn't talk beyond the occasional itaianesse noises, so the movie would be stuck making the rather hard choice between leaving him as a mostly mute main character who'd have to use only body language/have others speak for him, or give him a full speaking role which might sound off-putting to most people who are used to him not speaking. Either of these make for trouble given he's (likely) gonna be the main character

Still though Nintendo is currently riding off the overwhelmingly positive success of Mario Odyssey, so they aren't wrong to try and take advantage of the (larger than usual even by most Mario titles) hype.
Ultimately I guess we will have to wait and see to see how this will turn out.

Here's to hoping for the best given that if a video game movie staring the most popular video game character ever doesn't succeed, then no video game movie will EVER succeed.

>Illumination
Can't wait for copy/paste character models, lollipop-proportioned character designs, forced big-name actors who shouldn't be voice acting, awful song numbers, and some forced comic relief gibberish-talking sidekick designed to sell shit.
So excited

Illumination actually makes me miss Blue Sky…

Isn't Illumination Entertainment known for its low budget movie policy where they put as little money as possible while gaining as much profit as possible? That would explain the uninspiring character design choices and recycled models.

However, because there's going to be a Mario movie directed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself, this is more of a gamble than anything, really. But, I kinda have faith in this new film. Maybe this will be Illumination's first good movie in a while, after all the company has made a slew of bad or mediocre films.

It's also worth mentioning that Nintendo is still cautious about this, what with the failure of that Super Mario live action movie.

>Illumination Studios

Even with Miyamoto i have almost no faith in this due the fact Illumination Studios tends to be really cheap and also with stuff like forced big-name actors, terrible song numbers and forced comic relief character with Jar Jar Binks tier level of awful.

I'd like to think on how they would take on the no talking part is like how they did the gibberish talk in super star saga, but that could be annoying to a degree.

Keep in mind, this is the same studio that adapted The Lorax, where one of the main character's face is kept hidden throughout the entire book (and was pulled off successfully in the original animated adaption, mind you), and they completely throw that out the window in the literal second he's shown in flashback.
Keeping a face hidden or working around the fact that a character can't talk is too much creative effort for such a safe, bland, and cheap studio, unless they want Mario to talk in Minionese and please god no.

I don't think that is a fair analogy. Rabbids are owned by Ubisoft, a company with a history of titles running the spectrum from quality to trash. We happened to get Ubisoft at its best with Mario + Rabbids. Meanwhile, Illumination has never made anything worthwhile. It's just a bad company that puts out cheaply made, boardroom-designed schlock for broad family audiences. If the Mario movie turned out well, it would be Illumination's first good movie. They might surprise us by hiring Paper Mario writers or something, but given the circumstances, skepticism is natural.

> co-producer

That means pretty much means nothing. He can put some force on certain aspects of the project but he’ll be competing with the dozens of other producers and even then the final say still lies with the director and writers.

Only hope I could have for it at this point is if most of the executives and producers are from Nintendo, that live action movie really activated their almonds and hopefully they know better enough than to let Hollywood dickbags abuse their IPs.
