Recently, Netflix announced Dragon's Dogma will be getting an animated series of its own. The anime will be produced by Sublimation Studios, known for their work on…uh…some stuff, I guess??????

Oh, they purely do 3DCG stuff.

My first reaction is a big fuckin' "Why?" Nobody asked for this. I'm sure not even Dragon's Dogma fans asked for this. I'm sure an overwhelming majority of DD fans played the game and thought, "Huh, this is a masterfully written story!" Granted, the game also got a manga, no idea how good that is.

But, who knows? Maybe this will turn out better than everyone thinks it will be, and maybe, if we're all stupidly opti-I mean, lucky enough, this might pave way for Dragon's Dogma 2.

Second reaction, "Why Netflix?" The platform isn't exactly known for churning out some good literary stuff, and I was afraid that it might show in the final product. One exception I could think of that didn't show was in Baki (2018), also a Netflix Original. But, if I'm correct about this, Netflix only distributed it and didn't have a hand in actually doing any producing or writing or any of that. Still, not holding my breath of this turns out to be ass.

Overall, I have little optimism about this in general. Sublimation Studios doesn't seem like it has any sort of amazing track record producing actual series, Netflix distribution may pave road to some funky "localization" tier bullshit, the fact that Dragon's Dogma in general isn't an amazing story game at ALL, all leads me to think this might turn out okay at best, terrible at worst.

What are your thoughts? Feeling despair like me? Cautiously optimistic? Do you even know what Dragon's Dogma is? Share 'em.

"Who knows?" describes exactly how I feel about this. It might be amazing, it might be terrible; who knows? The game's story certainly is nothing to write home about, but I feel that's a great excuse to give the studio liberties, like what happened to Kemono Friends.

Still waiting for a Dragon's Dogma 2 and what we get at this point is an animated series? One done in CGI? As a fan of Dragon's Dogma, I'm curious but I'm also getting the hunch it may not be good. I just hope they try to follow the plot of the games better than the manga, especially with the main pawn. That is unless they somehow get the story of the online game involved or more likely introduce their own spin on what happens in a anime adaption of Dragon's Dogma.

As for the manga, it kinda follows the games though the main character's pawn is not one he makes but rather some random lady pawn he comes across. In the end, he goes the path of the Mystic Knight and kills the dragon with a shield related skill. No confrontation with a wizened old Edmund or with the Seneschal though.
