I'm not sure what's going on anymore. I'm seeing stuff about many different users who are apparently the same people, and then I see two different accounts, and then I get really confused.
From what I can gather, Garlic McNabb=Chris Menning who was trolling us. However, I then see two different accounts, one Chris Menning and one Garlic McNabb. Which leads me to believe that my previous assumption was wrong. So can someone please try to explain this whole mess again?
And don't give me the tl;dr version, I want the whole story.
If you read the entire thread fry, it would pretty much explain everything. And your assumption is right, btw.

Okay, that's helpful. At least I now understand one part.
But why are there two different accounts for Garlic and Chris?
@Below
Okay, thank you.
He used one account to help screen members to see if people could handled being trolled for the chance of making them mods (which was a terrible idea).
I'm not sure what to take away from this.
I like Chris (secretly a little bit more after this debacle, but don't tell anyone) and I thought Garlic McNabb was alright for his real talk but I'm not sure what this means for me as a moderator.
I think anyone should be allowed to type whatever they like as long as it's not spam, porn or gore. I think that people should be held accountable for what they post and if they do something stupid, other people should let them know. But is that bad moderating? That's what confuses me.
I've received complaints from people about users who are being trolls. I seldom ban because I think it's silly for someone to be offended by something someone says to them over the internet. I mean, if I were to say to you reader, that you are a punk bitch and will never amount to anything, you have to remember that I've never met you. I don't know who you are and hell, if we met each other some place irl we could maybe hang out and be best buds. The things people say to you on the internet hold no weight. You don't need to defend your honour, just laugh or shrug it off.
I really don't want to ban someone because you can't take a little internet smack talk. I don't know if that makes me a bad mod or what, but I is what I is.
tl;dr: I'm not sure if this event makes me the best or worst moderator.
Wow, I left RIGHT before the shitstorm got at its worst. I can't believe how bad it actually got. I did lose a little respect for the forums.
I could type a long post on my opinion, but then I'd just be repeating what people already said.

Douchebag.
Through all of this I never even resorted to name-calling. And I've kept this under wraps but other users' parents have actually got in contact with me because of how you've harassed their kids. Enjoy your ban.

So after you started this shitstorm, you're threatening to ban other users, when it was your fault this happened in the first place?
Edit: Too late. Already banned Taryn, I see.

Shitstorm? Let's not be melodramatic.
Too many users are unwelcoming of newcomers, and don't hesitate to feed the trolls.
Were my actions deserving of a ban? Sure. Absolutely. My alt is still banned.
Taryn's ban was a long time coming.

We are only unwelcoming to the assholes, or the complete idiots. Everyone got hit with that at the beginning. Does that mean "oh i haet this site, im guna leave" No. Many people stayed and are now better users that are more accepted. Even newfags are saying what you did was wrong. Also we're not rude to every single new user on this site. And the worst Taryn has done was call you a douchebag several times. So why don't you get off of your almighty throne, stop acting like you're God himself, and just end this. It has gone way to far, Chris.
P.S. If being mean to a user deserved auto banning, we'd have maybe 3 active users left. You can't just tell people to change. This is the internet. You can't take what everyone says seriously. I wonder why that sounds familiar? I think the newfags can handle themselves.

A message from Taryn in the IRC

Some people in this forum do all of the following too often:
1. Feed the trolls (even when they know its a troll)
2. Harass newcomers
3. Shut down anyone with conflicting opinions
4. Speak on behalf of Know Your Meme without realizing that the deciders are the staff.
5. Use "Chris Menning once said" as though because I once said something it must be law.Not everything that I said as Garlic was something that I honestly agree with. Most if it was said to see how people would react. And people reacted much worse than I ever expected.
Also, the choice to switch my accounts wasn't to decieve anybody. It was to show you that the noob that you guys belittled for "being pseudo-intellectual" was actually me. I've really lost hope that this community will welcome other people interested in meme research.
But as for owing anyone an apology, I regret nothing.
You know, this is great and all, and I agree with many of these points.
But I never heard this as a, "hey we are moderators, and there are some serious problems with the forums and its users. Let's have a discussion about what we can do, and communicate with the users about how we feel about the forums' direction."
Instead what I got was a "moderators are doing a terrible job, and the users have absolutely no self control; let me prove this point by trolling, testing, spamming, and threatening to ban people."
I have already been butting heads with the administrators over a lot of stuff over a long period of time, with topics ranging from entry objectivity to enforcing better KYM rules to communicating with the moderators about the direction of KYM. I don't want to hear that moderators don't act properly on behalf on the adminstrators, and that its all the users' faults if you guys aren't going to tell us how we can be better at our job, and how we can peacefully make the forums a better place.
Seriously, the fact that I said I would stop moderating for a while, and while I am gone, Chris Menning is intentionally trolling the users; it feels like I've been backstabbed. As soon as a moderator who does try to communicate a lot with the admins leaves, a former admins starts this entire mess and blames the users. I've been open about being told how I can fix problems. I am not god. Moderators can't be expected to know exactly what are the problems with the website when there is no attempt at discussion. Do the other admins besides Chris Menning know about this? I don't know, but you've blown a huge hole in all the admins' credibility (since Garlic=Chris was something that the admins obviously knew, shown in some wall/forum posts), and obviously I can trust them even less (although I really want to believe that its absolutely not their fault, and is 100% your maverick doing) to effectively communicate with the moderators.
I have made it clear that the admins can tell the moderators anything.
As much as I respect you and your work, I feel that fulfilling an independent agenda without consulting anyone, and blaming everyone else leads to a huge mess. That mess happened yesterday.
I have never been more disappointed with the admins of this site in my life.
If this is how the admins or former admins are going to try to get their points across, by blaming users all across the board, by saying "my faith in KYM is failing, and I should troll to prove a point," and by a failure of communication to both the moderators and users of this website, then i don't kinow what to say.
I never once said moderators were doing a bad job. Existing moderators have done an excellent job. See, the point to be proven here is that it's not the moderators job to go around banning people for every little dispute.
Those who were candidates to become mods needed to be screened. If you crack under pressure and start calling people names, then you don't deserve to be a forum mod. Some candidates DID crack, others didn't.
Was this my own personal agenda? No. I've discussed Garlic McNabb at length with other staff, and they've even encouraged it for months.
Actually OGW, Don was in the IRC with us a few moments ago. He said neither he, nor Brad new about this. So he went undercover without even asking the other staff members, apparently.

[13:23] <PimpAbra> Don-: I have to ask, was Chris's trolling of users to help screen mods sanctioned?
[13:23] <taryn> All by Chris
[13:23] <kalmo> Apparently he didn't run this idea by anyone

They didn't know about the last 24 hours, but they've known Garlic was trolling users.
They've been very aware of the problem of users trying to claim that being "oldfags" gives their say more authority than "newfags."
Garlic McNabb's trolling was on his own accord, and not something that was approved by KYM staff.
