Well, for one thing, the 'mental illness" remark was uncalled for.

Look, you leave control of our own to us. I agree that we have far too many pics as of now and that more keep coming but this is the wrong way to fix it. This being seen as an act of aggression instead of a way to keep the brony community from exploding like the ticking time bomb that we are. If we could put a limit on pics posted per day (not sure if that is possible) and us bronies need to get all the sub-meme pics off of the main page and into their proper sub-memes.

Sorry, but It's as "uncalled for" as the "pony hater" remark when people are sensibly trying to make you see what you're doing.
EDIT:
This being seen as an act of aggression instead of a way to keep the brony community from exploding like the ticking time bomb that we are.
Why? Why is it an aggression?
I can go through the recent comments and people are seriously believing that the whole website treat them like shit because ot that?
How is that possible that those people don't notice the obvious? There is a MLP thread, MLP-related sub-memes and hell, trending pictures with ponies, even featured sections with ponies. I don't think I will be mad if you post pony versions of other memes in their respective entry. You can post in threads, in comment sections and everything and I think other users won't be that mad (I don't know actually but still) as the "pony kind of spam event" if there are one or 2 pony-related threads here, more than the MLP general.
So why are those people thinking the MLP entry will die off? Why?
Here, I'm reopening the video section, even if I think it's still too much for what it is.
But no, me living and me having mod privileges, I won't reopen the image section for now.
I understand what you are doing but it is being perceived incorrectly by the rest of the community and they might attempt something drastic. I am simply trying to avoid that by proposing a better solution but you appear fixated on the thought that we are some rabid dog that needs to be put down.

@Tomberry
This decision seems to be based on more of a personal grudge than a practical concern. I understand that image dumps might be putting some strain on the servers, and that there should really be tighter regulations on image uploads (I agree that taking a screenshot of an episode and uploading it is more of an annoyance than anything else). However, the page attracts a lot of traffic to the site, largely because of the daily image uploads, and it is partly responsible for the increase in popularity for KYM (it's what brought me here for starters). There's a fairly large brony community on this site, and blocking images is likely to drive off site members. Overall, I really don't see how blocking the image section is supposed to benefit the site.

i really hope the situation will be cleared soon and there will be no more censoring of any kind.
KYM is a site for documenting memes. this means that every picture that us related to a certin meme needs to be posted. even if there are 11k picutres! if there are reposts, they are being reported and deleted. what tomberry just done helps no one and just slaps the fanbase in the face

Thank you.
I also understand your view on the matter.
On the other hand, I did it, not because I want bronies to post less content-a-day, but because I think a KYM entry is made to show why a phenomenon has become what it is. The video and image sections are here to emphazise that fact only, by showing how the phenomenon evolved and/or is viewed by fans.
If you have read other articles on this website, you can see that 100 pictures or videos are more than enough to show what a meme or a subculture is about. Most of the time, if you have saw it too, the pictures are often the most reposted, and the videos the ones that are the most views to show popularity via a somewhat reliable source, usually Youtube.
The problem here is that, instead of having a KYM community with Touhou fans, Pokemon fans, furries and so forth, we have a pony community ON KYM, not a KYM community with bronies in it.
I must admit that it's partly because many users on KYM rejected the bronies because they were intrusive and quick to post rainbow-colored ponies when a thread showed up.
But now, it's over… kinda.
I mean, you can circlejerk freely in the comment section of an entry about how much you like one show or the other, that's not the problem. The real problem is that the the MLP entry started being a gathering place for bronies, weither or not they understood that the entry simply works as a wikipedia kind of page to make the reader aware of the phenomenon, how it began, how it developped and everything.
Knowing that, I still maintain that it's not necessary to have 11k pictures and a 1k videos.
At most 1k pictures is enough to show that the sub-culture takes places in fanarts, image macros, fanstories and reaction faces, and the same for videos with the most views to show that there is some kind of cult-following behind it, and that it confirms the information in the article.
Again, the KYM entry shouldn't be seen as a gathering place for any sub-culture fans. It's like flooding the wikipedia page for the MLP show with pictures of ponies and wanting to have hookups with wikipedia bronies simply because it documents it…
When you create an account for this website, it's either because you want to learn more about memes, want to participate in the KYM community (not the pony community), in the forums, or help us writing entries about things we may not know but that are famous phenomena on the web.
The MLP entry has plenty of links to pony-related places already…
After lurking the thread a little more, I'm glad Tomberry explained his/herself a bit more.
Â
I somewhat agree with the decision. MLP communities won't die even without any article here. Image macros and art will continue to be made. EqD does a perfect job of documenting the spread in news posts and the Nightly Roundup.
And like Tomberry said, the article and sub-memes probably do a better job of documenting the spread of the meme than posting every new Pony picture on the web. KYM is a meme site. KYM would be silly to not have an article, but it doesn't have to hold any and every image MLP related.
Â
I don't like the "I'm a mod, and I'll do what I see fit" stance, but I'm not a mod, so whatever. I do wish he/she would address other neutral mods and see what they think. I'd suggest deleting older pics and videos (I've read through the thread, but I haven't seen that suggestion yet,) but that would still leave an Image tab that has 2-3 MLP pics per line of 5 pics.
Guys. Though I am supporter of the MLP page, Tonberry has a point.
11k images. 1k videos. On the main article. Think we've proven the point that MLP Sub culture is a huge massive engine of content.
I've been through the archive of meme's on this site quite a few times in the years I was only lurking. No other meme/subculture/anything has exploded like this on the site.
Not to mention we have been ignoring our sub-meme it seems. Have you seen how many "sitting Lyra's" Have been posted to the main article just on the second page?
AS I've just posted in the main article. Not the end of the world. If you got some super special awesome picture you want to share, post it in the comments or something. Or heck put it in the sub-meme it might belong in!
And I've wasted half my lunch break on this so back to eating mah sandvich. (Also dude, mental illness comment? Not cool. Just saying.)
Hey guys I think the problem of overflowing media in entry galleries will be solved when we have multiple sorting options in the gallery. For example: the default view would be by "highest rated", and there would be options to view for "most commented" and just "all" (the current view) as well.
@Don
That sounds pretty cool. I can't wait to see it.
As for the issue with the 11K images, one has to remember that the subculture is continuing to evolve. Take the recent Socks sub-meme. I had seen it brewing in the images for some time before it became big enough to add it to the Pony Re-Imaginings page, and it is in the main page -- not the meme page -- that the meme's first inklings are documented. The image section is therefore a document of the meme's early history, and was extremely valuable to me when I wrote its entry, and began populating the page with examples. The issue with your promise to re-open the images once season 2 starts, you forget how many memes (using Socks as another example) have come out of the fandom, and how few of them have a direct relation to the show. A new sub-meme could pop up at literally any time, and it is KYM's prerogative to be receptive to its documentation. Since an early sub-meme won't have its own page to record this information on, the main page is the only place to post the early examples. By shuttering the image section, you are shooting your own site's goals in the foot.
Humpf, once again no, I did not shoot KYM in the foot.
The main core of the information is in the article itself, not its image section. If changes/evolutions happen that are important enough, they will be added to the entry.
Anyway, case closed. I'm reopening the image section.
The repost problem in the MLP entry has been answered by James. Other problems raised in the initial posts are currently discussed by the Staff.
Thank you to keep this thread clean and about that stuff only.
Where can I post captions of Stoned Spike (for example) now? Do I need to write the article? But if I do that people will complain ("aw hell naw another MLP meme?" bla bla bla)…so, wat do?
I should throw in that I'm a brony, as well.
Â
@Platus
Memes spread throughout the Internet without the help of KYM before KYM. It's true (as it seems from the comments in the MLP article,) that plenty of bronies primarily congregate on this site, but sub-memes can spread on other sites as well. If the potential candidate for meme status can make it in the big WWW, then I think it can only strengthens its credibility as a sub-meme.
Â
Or more simply, "Since an early sub-meme won’t have its own page to record this information on, the main page is the only place to post the early examples," isn't quite true. It will be posted elsewhere on the Internet, and then the earliest images can be uploaded to the candidate page later on. Much like the screen caps of the origins of the Derpy Hooves name from a forum page.

Okey dokey lokey! Disregard my previous post!
Just throwing some numbers out there.
We have 142,857 (21.6GB) images uploaded to the site. This doesn't count any of the thumbnail versions of each image, or entry icons, user avatars, etc.
There are 13,146 (3.68GB) images uploaded to the MLP entry and its submemes and each image is an average of 294KB in size. 9.2% of all the images on the site are pony images and they take up 17% of that 21.6GB.
42% of all pony images are pngs, and that's why the file sizes are so large.
Actually, I think Tomberry's lock is a good idea, although I think he should admit he went to far by insulting people and saying he was going to ignore his fellow mod's wishes.
It would be a very good thing if we could delete all reposts, and move all sub-meme images to the appropriate pages. This would clear a lot of memory space from KYM, and would make the images section a lot easier to navigate.
So, I advise that we should re-lock the images for the month of august, and spend the time cleaning it up.
Thanks for the stats James. I'll try and convert my PNG files to something else next time I post images.
I would also like to thank you for the stats, James. I will convert what images I upload to the gallery to JPGs when I can as long as the conversion doesn't mar the image. For some reason some images I convert turn out horribly because of some transparency issue, thankfully it is only an issue with a small number of those converted images.
Thankfully I was asleep/at work during this war.
But I will point out some things. Although the problem is already solved.
Information on the popularity is also based on the images. Not directly on the content of those images, but a number also shows it's popularity. An entry can't get 10k+ images without being popular, it's a legal argument in discussing it's popularity.
Sorry if it bothers anyone, just wanted to point it out.
Back to the image problem we STILL have.
A thank you for James first for pointing out the png/jpg difference. This will help uploaders.
Also love the new SHA-2 hashes system, but this still doesn't cover a second problem.
If a person saves a image on his pc, followed by uploading it from his pc, the source has changed. Making reposting still possible (I have not yet tested this, so I might be wrong). But also a slight edit (cutting away 0.1 mm from the side), changes the source.
So even though there is a new SHA-2 hashes system, reposting is still possible. Also the same images are featured on different sites. Giving them different sources.
I think this explains the suprisingly low number of reposts.
Also the problem is mainly caused by a few people (as I have stated before). As I type this forum post, one of them is posting a humongous amount of Lyra to the main entry. Not only is this the wrong entry, but almost all the images feature lame simple edits, I'm more annoyed by it. I took the time to check his account, noticing he almost reached 1000 image uploads. So currently I'm pretty sure he's just boosting his title.
But there are more people who upload TOO much, although they are few in number. Is there some way we can stop them. They have been told about it in the comments, but the result was almost always a flame war. So reasoning is probably impossible. Can't we forbid those responsible from uploading. They're even uploading images from sub-meme's.
I too thought that only 400 or so reposts was too low and I believe you are correct Random in your assumption. This same problem is found on other sites that use the hash system. Even though the hash system doesn't solve everything, it does help. It's now up to us to patrol what images are left and make sure we find the reposts that are left.

That won't be easy, finding Waldo looks simple now.
We really need a report button.
Where you saved the file from or even the filename it has shouldn't matter. If the image data is the same then it'll be detected as a duplicate.
Now if you re-save it as a different file format or make any kind of changes to the image like changing its quality, changing a pixel, etc, then it will have a different hash.
I also don't see any duplicates in Twilight Sprinkle's photo gallery.
"I also don’t see any duplicates in Twilight Sprinkle’s photo gallery."
Ah, then perhaps we have been too hard on him.
It wasn't directly the duplicates, more the images in the wrong entry.
But also what Platus said. Yeah, I kinda feel like an assh*le now.
