Where's that "inb4 shitstorm" image when you need one?
Well whatever. It seems like there are almost two parts of KYM. People who some here just for the ponies, and people who come here just for the memes.

I don't understand why we don't lock the comments and image section of the MLP entry. I mean really, we get that it's a meme. People are just using it like a mini MLP fan site. It should all be restricted to the Pony General thread.

This makes even more sense. But I think I mentioned how I feel about sense already, didn't I?

Alright, look. You people may not like ponies, but it doesn't mean you should hate those who do. That's /b/tarded shit. Can't we just respect and tolerate anyone, regardless of their interests?

It's not about liking or disliking them it's about the fact that they've dominated the trending bar and the image section for far too long. We really need to move on.

We can't do that, because the comment section is a testament to the actual popularity of the meme, this site is actually influencing the meme itself. The site has become a part of the study. It's too late to change that.

It's no longer even about it's popularity. It's about the same 15-20 users who are continually posting in the entry. It's also so prevalent because it shuts out other memes from even appearing in the trending section and therefore crushing the popularity of such entries.

Guys, this has been talked about between a few of the mods, Don, and James.

Here's the summary:

It's better to have more photos than too little photos.
The pony images aren't taking up a massive amount of room so it isn't a problem of memory.
Locking photos or comments would create more problems than it would solve.

For my money, I find it annoying, but then I think about how I wish other sites had done this for some of the memes I've had to look up.

tl;dr More documentation is better, plain and simple.

Also, as far as crushing the popularity of other memes:

1. If you want to find other memes, just go browse the submissions or confirmed section.

2. Our site isn't here to astroturf small memes into big ones so it makes sense that the most popular entry is the one that is, surprise surprise, the most popular.

I suppose the difference there is that the desu entry is just spamming while the MLP entry has conversation going on.

I think there is to much sense being made into this thread. The war within my mind (The conflict between Logic and Sanity vs. Theory and Insanity) cannot tolerate too much of one side. I am sorry guys but I think if I just keep reacting to these posts I will feel like a one man online sitcom. So, in turn, I abandon this conversation (not that I don't support sense, as you guys already know its just that I have a character I need to act in, and I gotta be consistant with my actions, for consistancy is the only thing in life that has made my internal conflict at just mere skirmishes) before I get banned for being off topic.

Now if you will excuse me I will now drink my hot orange tea from my 'Alcatraz Condos' mug.

If that is the case I request that the comment section be unlocked on other confirmed entries including the desu entry.

I unlocked the Desu comments, I think a year long break is enough. But if it starts getting spammed again, then BAM. That thing's getting locked again.

I don't want to create hate, but I disagree to this. Yes, there are people who just joined this site for MLP, but that's just a small amount. There are enough people who are fan of MLP and are active on the rest of the site. Myself for example, I'm often posting in the comments and the forum. But I also try to be active in the rest of the forums. Also the other memes on this site: I'm a fan of a lot of other memes. I'm not here just for the ponies, but it's true that they're a part of the reason for my activity on this site. I've also done my share in documentating memes, both ponies and others.

I guess I can be called one of those "15-20" who keep MLP trending by posting in the comments. But progress is already made, the main forum is a lot more active than it was before and a lot of discussion is now removed from the comments. The comments are now mainly used for discussion and development in and around the community, but simple greeting and stuff is also present. Sometimes things go of topic for various reasons, but those situations are usually solved quickly.

I said I wouldn't post here again, but well…

Anyways I can share great relation to this post. Okay here it goes.

Ponies was the push to make me sign up on this website. But I knew the site from a long time ago, and love memes and internet culture. Because of the general annoyance of how there ARE some people on this site who are only here for the mlp related things and/or just discuss ponies, I try to limit my comments about anything pony related. Though that dosn't stop me from liking ponies, not a single bit.

So random's man said that "I'm not here just for the ponies, but it's true that they're a part of the reason for my activity on the site."

I say: "I am (generally) not here for the the ponies, but they are my reason of signing up for KYM."

On another approach: Tomberry asked on the main forum a while back about the fandom inside KYM. How it could create a remote community from the site.

He got multiple answers (one which is my own), it might show you how some bronies discovered the community and how it developed, also how it stays so popular.

Link to the page of the forum here
His question is posted around 65% of the page.

Well, I'm glad about that, you seem fine. But I have noticed a lot of users who post on the forums but only comment on the Friendship Is Magic page and images. I mean, look at the "most commented" images, for example. At any given time, more than half of them are ponies, which indicates to me that they aren't commenting on anything else, something I've also noticed in some users' "activity" pages.

Please, enough of probronies/antibronies flamewars.
Anyway yeah, even if I think I've worded my argument not as correctly as I thought, they answered me with details.

Point taken: they think it's normal to have a vocal remote community on a website that has nothing to do about it → some of us think it's not.
They literally live to make that entry live beyond that sub-culture point and into one of the most popular articles of KYM's all time → I, then, don't really care about it because it brings pagehit, ratings, popularity and money, and we all know that really appeals to Cheezburger's policy (or any website for that matter) so it's all good.

Case closed.
I'm just a little looking forward to the day drawing ponyfied versions of a token character will be seen as old-fashioned, losing all its current appeal.

Oh, look, we're retreading old ground. Again. What is this, four, five times? It'll probably happen again too, won't it. Oh well, I guess I'll just try and contribute to this discussion as best I can.

I agree that MLP is in that trending bar far too much, but locking the comments would be incredibly bad to do. I'd say just don't let it trend anymore, but the fact is it has had to earn its status as trending by having constant comments. I really do believe that the majority of those comments should be moved to the forum thread though, as most of them don't really relate to MLP as a meme or subculture so much as they relate to the show itself. That isn't something that can be fixed by a simple lock or anything though, so really, it might do some good if a comment were sort of forced to the top/stickied at the top of the comments with guidelines on what kind of discussion is appropriate to have in the comments.

Locking the images I don't really know about. On one hand, there isn't any space crisis or anything, and the site is supposed to document as many things that come out of the subject of any given entries as possible, but it still is rather ridiculous how many images go up every day, and also that there are already sites dedicated exclusively to images by and for bronies.

Hey Sui, you did notice how there really aren't that many pony images in the trending images anymore, right? Because that second post of yours in this thread seems to think otherwise.

@ Ardent Gamer: I'm pretty sure Suiseiseki talking about the "most commented" and "most favorited" sections, and to a smaller extent, the "recently uploaded" section. They still dominate those sections, though I'm seeing uploads being dialed back a bit.

Profit.

Even better, allow the ponies to stay here, but make users submit a credit card or PayPal account and charge $.05 for every item uploaded to the MLP page.
