Dear Kym, about the ads

It could just be something on my end, but I suddenly noticed the rather strange/annoying placement of ads in the galleries

I have nothing against ads on websites, but this is not okay

p.s not sure if this is in the right place, if not please move it to the correct forum.

I got a new laptop recently and for some reason kym barely works on it for me wondered if my new laptop is just bad which is entirely possible. Then I remembered to install adblock today as I had it on my old computer. The second I installed adblock kym instantly started working super smoothly.

That's screwed up.

I am noticing it on my end as well. It's not just confined to a single gallery as seen by my snapshots.

The offending ads have been outlined in red.

General Image Gallery

RWBY Image Gallery

Overwatch Image Gallery

I am wondering if this is somehow related to the resizing of thumbnails and layout change.

Basically forcing people to turn on Adblock in order to use your site. This is like a store knowing that there's a guy out in front who steals everyone's money before they enter but not doing anything about it.

KnowYourMeme really needs to do something about the video ads (preferably remove them). They're annoying due to having sound, and really slow the site down when I'm using it, forcing me to use Adblock.

The video ads on KYM are specifically the reason I installed adblock on 3 different computers.

The difference in performance with those on and off is STARK.

Remember when they promised us "optimized ads?" Yeah thanks guys.

I am never disabling adblock on this site.

It's optimizing your patience lol.

>30mbps internet

I want to support this site, and I usually don't run Adblock unless the ads run rampant.
So I'm running it for awhile until these douchebags learn how to ads.

KYM's issue with the ads is that whoever decides on them is a fucking idiot.

Based on the "pls disable adblock" campaign, it can be assumed ad income has shown a decrease.

So their reply to it? More ads, more annoying ads, and more ad locations, to hopefully make up for the ad loss.

This is why the person behind the ads is a fucking idiot. They seem to assume that ads are some sort of linear graph: more ads is more ad revenue.

Said idiot couldn't be more wrong. Ad income is like a Laffer Curve:

The Laffer Curve explains that punitive tax rates may not generate much additional revenue if people respond in ways that result in less taxable income; meaning people will look for more and more ways to avoid paying taxes when they increase beyond an acceptable level.

Ads work the same: The more ads you have, they more annoying they are, and the more they ruin site experience and loading times, the more people will eventually start using adblock regardless of if they wish to support the site.

If they even start ruining site loading times, which we can confirm is happening, you can even assume people will stop using KYM altogether if they are unfamiliar with adblock.

I have never seen a bigger idiot run ads than on KYM.

A big problem now with all the ads is that, even if KYM does fix them, how will people know to disable adblock? KYM has caused a lot of people to install adblock due to how awful the ads are, and I don't think people would just disable adblock without any reason. I disable adblock about once a week for KYM to see if the ads improve (they don't), but I assume most people wouldn't do that.

There were those "pls disable adblock" banners I mentioned before.

Once the ads are (finally) fixed, add that banner once more, but with a link to a thread where people get informed of the new ad system and can report unacceptable ads that might've been missed.

This doesn't give a message of "pls disable adblock cus we need monies" but more of a "we admit our wrong and are trying to fix it but will need feedback". Those that disable adblock to check if it got fixed might then decide to keep it off if they find them acceptable.

As long as the banner is, at the very least, not visible to non-adblock users; which was really counterproductive last time as even those without adblock were requested to turn it off and made the site look like a fool.

Downside is that you have only one shot at this. If you call them fixed, but they are still broken as hell, people will never disable adblock again regardless of requests. One shot to do it right for once.

At this stage, the answer will never be more. Unless you intend to make KYM unusable and unwelcome.

I use KYM on both the computer and my Samsung Galaxy. I have AdBlock on my computer, but I don't really use it for my phone. Basically what happens is whenever I use KYM on my phone some pages will eventually make pop-ups to either the store or some fishy website, so I basically use my phone to test if the ads are still awful or not

Regarding knowing when to disable Adblock, I've always had Adblock disabled on KYM and have Privacy Badger running all the time instead. It only blocks ads that fail to pass a strict filter against personal information collecting and cross-site tracking. I still see some ads in a few places on this site. Every now and then I see a new ad appear that wasn't there before, and I let myself be happy to see it. It also lets you toggle blocked domains just in case there's an obvious error (I once had trouble getting Wikia to load any images, for instance). It's been my favorite add-on for a few years now, the perfect carrot-and-stick for better advertising practices.

To be honest, the only reason I'm aware of KYM's increasing ad troubles is because other users are pointing it out (thank you guys so much for caring). That, and the "sponsored content" on the front page, and today, seeing empty, conveniently advertisement-shaped holes of blankness mixed into the image galleries.

I didn't realize the size of the can I would open by making this thread.

The ads have been a big issue going on for a fair while now, and this thread isn't the first complaint.

Try not to break your back through all the excessive patting you're giving it.

@Supreme

If your custom adblocker filters out shady ads, and you see gaping holes in the image gallery, that tells me enough about their quality (hint: trash).

I am not in the mood for pattings anyway.
right now I just want to be sad and regretful.

(not related to the ads)

Is anyone else having a problem with the video ads on image pages? I don't mean performance but my computer has started forcibly scrolling when they open up to try and get me to watch them.

Only for like a day, until forced redirects and downloads started happening. Sole reason I got me an Adblock.

Yeah, but I'm sure people WOULD still like to support the site in some way, without having to worry about the site running like crap. In this respect making them like, not do that, is better for everyone

I think I'm going to give up on not using adblock, at least until they fix this stuff. Any recommendations?

I white-list sites that have small, nonintrusive ads. Needless to say, this site ain't white-listed.

Still, it could be worse. Forbes has this thing that automatically blocks access to their site if they detect an adblocker.

The mobile ads have gotten so bad recently that I have to resort to 4g to view the site.
Using wifi only allows me to view a page after it loads for a maximum of literally five seconds before I'm forcibly redirected to an "ad" for an alleged ap that's most likely a worm or a virus or a trojan of some sort.
I haven't been able to browse the site as a result (no way I'm letting my computer touch this website without adblock, but using it makes me feel guilty) and 4g is expensive so I can't use that to check in more than once a week.
I mention all of this in hopes it would illustrate that more intrusive ads don't necessarily lead to more ad revenue, in the off chance anyone reading this has any power over the ads.

I guess KYM keeps loading while I leave it open and go to other apps, because I've been redirected to other sites while I'm in other apps because of ads on KYM. Most of the time it's some bullshit "Google" ad saying my phone is infected with viruses and I need to get some scam software.

so did the guy who's in charge of ads actually get the chance to see this thread?

I'm legit bumping this because I hope that someone actually sees this and shows it to whoever's in charge, whether it be in the Cheezburger or Knowyourmeme headquarters

I honestly doubt that they care, it's been almost a month and nothing has been done yet.

I would love if my ads were about replica race cars, I would actually check that shit out if it was legit. Instead all I'm getting is celebrity gossip and child celebrities who grew up
