@Eris He never served in the military, and the popular notion was nothing more than a widespread rumor.

Probably mixing him up with Bob Ross, who was an Air Force drill instructor before becoming a painter. It's also why he liked paintng pictures of snow-covered mountains, since he was stationed in Alaska for many years.
