Berkeley and You: a divide amongst parties

So, if you haven't been underneath a rock for the past three days, you've probably seen what's going around Youtube and what's been trending at the top of this site: "Battle for Berkeley". I'm making this because while they're not out of control, I feel like the comments section of the article isn't the best place.

Basically, what I want to know is how you view this event and what it means you feel about either side, or if we should stop trying to make sides.(Full disclosure since I won't be responding a ton today: I'm basically a liberal and while I understand and even agree with the grievances towards Antifa, being a liberal isn't any harder on me. But I want some perspective on it.)

Honestly, I feel like this mess will only serve to entrench everyone's already established positions on the matter. Antifa and the Alt-Right continue to do what they do, and ultimately nothing has changed in the broader sense.

And the worst part is that I feel that the sidelines themselves feel tainted by it. It seems like everyone who looks at it immediately tries to find something about to try and give moral superiority to their positions and ideology. I feel like the virtue signaling and the anti-virtue signaling have become one and the same. And it's rare for me to find anything insightful, its all just "This is proof that my position is correct!" sort of crap that doesn't contribute anything.

Actually, scratch that, if there is any particular thing that the battle has proven correct it's that Pepsi were fucking morons for making that ad with Jenner. For the delicious taste of sweetened carbonated beverage's sure as hell didn't stop the violence.

This is great. Its showing everyone the true colors of these two groups both parties have been desperately appealing to, while also losing touch with the majority of voters who are done with politics all together due to how extreme and toxic it is.

This is like stepping back from a fandom flame war and realizing just how stupid it is to argue which fictional character would be better to have sexual relations with. These people suck, their ideology sucks, and the thing they call morals and values is just.a shroud hiding the fact neither wants to give any ground in how the country should be, or how culture should be.

I hope everyone takes it all in. And i hope everyone comes to the realization that outrage, moral panic, and "fighting for your beliefs" is not the same thing as fighting for rights or equality. It's just people taking petty internet fighting into the real world.

If Antifa is seriously drinking the kool aid and trying to stop the "fascists" than they're being complete idiots by not following Rule 19 and instead bringing headlines every time there's a Trump rally. Headlines that only dig the right in and make the left more uneasy. None of those rallies or protests would have gone beyond the local news if the M80s and pepper spray wouldn't have been brought.

But I don't really think Antifa's serious. I think they're just a bunch of edgy teens/young adults who want to stir shit up for the lulz and have found political bullshit to be the most efficient means of doing so.

I honestly still believe it's primarily that Antifa's fault that all of this is happening. Granted, the Trump supporters have been getting violent too but only in response to these people. I mean I don't necessarily agree with it but I can understand why they've begun to retaliate in kind.

What I still don't seem to fucking understand, however, is why police aren't getting more involved with this shit. I'd expect them to stop this shit before it starts, not intervene around the time it's basically over.

Huh, that's an interesting point I hadn't heard before. I'm curious, could you elaborate on that last point about Antifa being in it for the edge/ lulz?

I say that's more trump supporters then antifa. Antifa seems to be composed of thoss online slacktivist Twitter warriors who have decided to take to the real world to make their views heard.

If the He will not divide us experiment showed anything, it was that one side seems to wholey believe that there must be violence used to stop racism and sexism, and another who wants to post pics of frogs and scream obnoxiously cause it makes them chuckle.
