Unpopular gaming opinions

Because why not bring this old thread back in some way?

-First unpopular opinion:
I feel like the competitive scene for certain games like Smash, Overwatch, TF2, and League of Legends think they have a somewhat inflated sense of thinking they're actually the reasons why a game is "alive" to begin with when frankly I feel like the true reason for any game's continued success is always going to be the casual players who simply play for fun. And what prompted this for me was a video ZeRo did where he seriously tried to claim this is the case for Smash Ultimate, and it also bugged me seeing him be one of the people who got upset at Nintendo specifying that the presentation for the ARMS character in Smash won't include any other announcements. Like dude can you not act like fans of ARMS don't exist or some shit?

This one is dunking on a popular game but for a reason that's unpopular:

I don't find The Last of Us Part 2 all that visually impressive, and it absolutely would not be worth the strain on employees even if it did look impressive to me. This is mostly because I couldn't give less of a shit about graphics fidelity or how realistic a game looks. It just looks like every other "realistic" game to me to the point of being utterly visually disinteresting, yet the graphics are one of the parts that are universally lauded about TLOU2 even by the game's detractors. It just feels extremely weird.

Its ridiculous the pass that Nintendo gets for their anti-competitive and anti-consumer ways for decades. I never see people complain about nintendo's bad business practices.
Lets see;
Nearly all their games (all their big titles) are only available on their exclusive hardware. That means to play any of their games, you have to spend hundreds of dollars on hardware for not practical reason for the consumer, its just so nintendo can make more money. For unique consoles like the wii with its motion controls or DS with touch and dual screens, there is practical reason for this exclusivity, but for titles that don't make much use of those features, or released for consoles like the switch, there is no reason to require people to spend hundreds on hardware when its not required to play the game.
They regularly re-sell you the same exact game for decades. Because of the hardware exclusivity, if your old system dies, you have to buy a brand new system AND re-buy the game for the new hardware. There is also the pokemon game series where they release two nearly identical versions of the game, which means you need to buy both games to have the full experience, and then roughly a year or so later, they release an updated version with some small updates, making you buy full price again for what in most games would be a free update.
They've relentlessly gone after fan made games as well as just people who just upload videos of nintendo games onto youtube. I think they have backed off of taking down videos? But I know for years many youtubers would avoid making videos of nintendo games due to fears of getting a strike from them.

Nintendo isn't a good company.

@Pooch

In the case of Microsoft I know they at least benefit from putting games on PC because they also make Windows, but Sony and Nintendo don't really get these same benefits so they need first party games to help sell their consoles, so are you saying you believe the video game market in general should have just one console that plays games from every company in existence then? Or that gaming should be a market that only exists on PC? Because admittedly it seems odd you singled out Nintendo on that when it sounds like in general you just don't like the idea of games being exclusive to one console regardless of who makes them. Also they stopped their infamous YouTube policies in 2018 so that's not an issue anymore. As for fan gamesโ€ฆ eh I admit this is a real grey area for me. Yeah if no profit is being made off the fan games one can argue it's a passion project that's not doing much harm, but in the situations where people are making money off of fan games or mods without approval of the copyright holder then I can't say I feel much sympathy for them when they get hit with a DMCA.

@back on topic
Skyward Sword's motion controls were perfectly fine and I'll just be "that asshole" and say that if you're someone who thinks the controls in that game suck, the controls don't suck, you just suck at playing the game right.

>the video game market in general should have just one console that plays games from every company in existence then?

I'm saying they shouldn't make games exclusive to any piece of hardware unless its vital to the gameplay.

>it seems odd you singled out Nintendo

Its because other companies don't make very many exclusives and because other companies normally get called out for their anti-consumer business tactics while nintendo almost never does.

Seems odd people get outraged over a game having DRM, but no one ever seems outraged over having to buy specialty hardware, which is basically just a $300+ DRM machine.

This September marks the 25th Anniversary of Clock Tower, and I believe Clock Tower deserves a nice scary remake like Resident Evil 2 & 3.

Sound design should take the forefront of game design, even going so far to say it is much more enjoyable to experience well crafted sound than any excellent soundtrack and music a game could offer.

Players often care too much about rewards. There seems to be this bad attitude of "if I'm not rewarded, why bother?" no matter if they hate or love the activity in question. Especially in MMOs.

Here's a few

- Something I mentioned before, namely Bethesda ain't over until they release a proper title (Starfield, TES VI).
- Oneshot's fourth wall break was an absolutely unnecessary twist that derailed a perfectly good story.
- Gothic is better than Morrowind. It's more immersive and has way more engaging combat. It's way more pleasant to explore. Also its fully voiced.
- Minecraft is THE original battle royale. Survival Games map features all staples of the genre with exception of reducing playing arena and start point selection.

I agree. Something I realized back when I played TF2 is that part of my motivation for playing was leveling up strange weapons. It felt like, if I didn't have that incentive there, there's a lot of times I wouldn't bother to play a match. Like an artificial increase in motivation, not for the fun of the match itself, but so my lizard brain can watch number go up

This was an unpopular opinion of mine years ago, and it still holds true now.

I dont care about nintendo. I never grew up with it like that. I played smash and mario kart when I visited my cousin as a kid, got a Wii as a teen and played new super mario bros, and that was about it.

As a result I often dont get, and can sometimes be annoyed by the internet's collective nintendo boner, especially on kym. And like Poochy said, it leads to nintendo getting a pass for doing shit that other gaming companies could never get away with.

And dont even get me started on how people will constantly proclaim that nintendo "won e3" simply because they introduced a new character to smash.

oof, I gots me a few:

1 | I don't think there will ever be a better Multiplayer Shooter[or perhaps even multiplayer game] than Team Fortress 2. Even with Valve neglecting it the base game is so well designed and memorable that I genuinely doubt there will be an actual game that will overtake my personal enjoyment of it.

2| My favorite Nintendo game is Eternal Darkness Sanity's Requiem. yes really. not exactly unpopular in that people don't like the game but it's usually not loved over Nintendo's other games. I hope some spiritual successor does get made or Nintendo makes a game similar to it, though I doubt Dennis Dyak himself could truly make something like it again.

3| Mafia 3 didn't deserve the hate it got at launch. It's admittingly a very flawed game[with it's glitches & badly thought out mechanics] and I still perfer the other games in the Mafia series over it. But that said despite it's disappointments I feel it still told a mostly engaging story with very interesting characters and a pretty neato blacksploitation aesthetic to the whole thing.

4| I perfer GTA IV to V. V isn't a terrible game and IV is still ultimately flawed but it told a much better story, had more things to do, had a much more interesting map and has a better cast of characters overall. V feels more like a Hollywood movie version of GTA than an actual GTA Game, there's ultimately less to actually do[shit like taxis, getting fat, etc] despite the fact the map itself is bigger and more accurate to real life Los Angeles. [hell, compared to San Andreas the map isn't really "bigger" in terms of scale, moreso just "more detailed"]

and don't get me started on what they did with online, GTA IV's DLCs provided interesting little plotlines of their own while rockstar never delivered with continuing V's. Splitting the 3D and HD Timelines overall was a mistake to me however.

5| While plenty of games in the DayZ style zombie survival genre suck[including DayZ itself], the idea in itself isn't that bad, but I've only seen it done right in unturned personally[I heard Rust is pretty good though]

6| Speaking of which, Fallout 76 could have been a genuinely good game[keyword: could], I've honestly always wanted a Fallout MMO. but because Bethesda was behind it all and plus they did shit like cut out NPCs, fucked up fallout's lore & their usual bouts of terrible game design, greed & mismanagement, they screwed up what could've been the best fallout game and now it's made the series a fucking laughing stock.

7| Maybe it's just from my experience of getting into D&D but I feel fallout as a whole would've been better as a Tabletop RPG rather than a video game. I find the lore itself to honestly be better than any of the actual games. not the greatest lore ever but fuck, my main enjoyment if anything in fallout is just being a bit of a "Wasteland Scholar" and discovering why the wasteland is the way it is.

8| The Metro 2033 series is better than any fallout game though. It's always an interesting thing to see a post-apocalyptic story not just set in the U.S. or U.K. and I feel it provides an interesting insight not just into Russian culture but the human condition in general.

9| Games as an Art Form should not be a controversial subject to begin with. No that doesn't mean I think every game should be Neil Druckman or David Cage style walking simulators, the medium should take advantage of it's actual interactivity and gameplay to tell compelling stories rather than just shun them to copy everything movies do. nor does every game have to be "Political" but that's a different subject

But that said I think it's undeniable Video Games can have artistic merit just as films, literature & animation do. Games like Hotline Miami, Silent Hill, Bioshock, This War of Mine, Grim Fandango, Undertale, etc. These games all serve as proof in the potential of games telling engaging stories & creating interesting worlds.

I dislike traditional turn based JRPG when it comes to combat. I find them to be too simplistic and boring. It generally boils down to who can out-damage who, with any serious strategy and immersive control thrown out the window. The outcome of any fight is heavily predetermined, either you're strong enough to overcome your foe or you aren't. If you are too weak, just grind levels and come back overpowered for an easy win.

Not so much a defense for TLoU2 (that game has more glaring problems), but there is indeed a place in gaming for dark and depressing experiences. Games such as Spec Ops, Silent Hill 2, LISA, and Doki Doki, none of those games are particularly "fun" to play, but they are equally evocative in their own right.

I think gaming is not going to truly evolve past its current point without us consumers going out of our way to support the middle market. Yeah, interesting stuff has been happening in the indie scene for a while, but it's the middle market where true innovation happens. Think about it: middle market games are cheap enough where developers can afford to take risks and attract niche markets while simultaneously having enough of a budget to make the game either large or graphically appealing. Sure, the visuals wouldn't be anything jaw dropping, but neither were most of the games in the PS2 era. I stand by the idea that GTA 3, Half-Life, and all the other games from that general time frame all looked ugly even for their times, and they were huge successes and innovators regardless.

Point is, the next time you see someone try to make a daring yet ultimately flawed game, try to support them as long as they're not scumbags.

I don't hate Morrowind's combat. For some reason I like the feeling of luck and chance while fighting, and how your odds are better when your stats are higher. Feels like your attributes actually have meaning.

I was also gonna add that VTM:B's combat wasn't that bad either, but then I remember about the Sewer level.

Also I think Byleth in Smash is alright.

Game reviews are far less important than we pretend they are, and not just those from "official" websites, at that. At the end of the day, they are opinions with a number associated with it.

Sure, some people do take the decision of buying a game based on its reviewsโ€ฆ but how big is this "some"..? How many people here do that..? More often than not, people have already taken the decision before any reviews are even out, and those that use reviews to take it probably already had preconceptions formed and the reviews either validate them or discredit them ever so slightly.

Nowadays, it feels like game reviews serve themselves more than they do the medium as a whole. They exist because people seek validation from them, not actual reviewing per se, and honestly, nobody would miss the practice if it eventually died out.

I think the Witcher is boring and overrated, i tried getting into it but i just couldn't.
Geralt of Rivia is just boring and edgy and was one of the reasons i couldn't get into the witcher series when i tried.
but i do like some of the character designs and the soundtracks.

I think survival mechanics(I.E. hunger/thirst/sleep/disease) make a game worse, especially if they're just there to micromanage or food/drink/beds are abundant.

I personally feel similarly about item/equipment durability mechanics, especially if the best and rarest items don't last long enough to justify using them. Or when you've still got to worry about them even when you've got the best of the best equipment Master Sword recharge New Horizons golden tools

I donโ€™t like button prompt/glory kill stuff.
I remember in the Thief games you can stealth kill an enemy by jumping down at them and timing your weapon swing to hit while youโ€™re falling. In metal gear rising you get a prompt and Raiden does that in a cutscene.
It feels cooler to do the flashy stuff yourself.

As someone that doesn't give much more care over the game beyond the memes, I agree. Sure it may look nice to some people but it's not really much to talk about especially if one saw games that can be much more visually impressive. The crunch it got also doesn't do much justification.

As for my own unpopular opinion โ€“ I don't even care if TLOU 2 succeeded or bombed. I'm all more for just laughing at whatever memes it made and as an asshole whatever tirefire it gotten such all the Abby edits made to mock it, not counting transphobic ones of course. The story itself doesn't sound any more or less good since I'm more of a gameplay kind of person and the gameplay itself doesn't sell for me. Hell, people that say how awesome the game is with some footage of Ellie shooting people and dodging fungus zombies doesn't even bring on any excitement for me. If anything, the one thing I could despise from the game are people that overblow their hate or love for it. Me hating the game doesn't mean I hate lesbians nor does me possibly loving it could mean I'd be kissing Druckman's feet like some sort of slave. Any other reservations I have for the game, I could save that in actually playing it when I either get a PS4 or PS4 emulation exist and makes it playable on pc's.

As for what is said by Zerg Lurker, that reminds me of cinematic kills I see in games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim. I don't care about that flashy slow-motion or how it looks cool my donut steel is in killing a dragon. The slow-motion feels like a drag that I thought gave me invincibility until an unlucky run-in with a Legion assassin group killed my courier while I was in VATS. And the animations for death blows in a game like Skyrim are just very meh save for decapitations and one I saw with a gargoyle that looked like an intresting struggle. And some kill animations like with dragons in Skyrim look more like a drag than something cool.

I never really and still dont "get" the hatred for tlou2.

Games not a 10/10 definitely and it most certainly doesn't treat joel good and the ending is fucking garbage, but having watched all the cutscenes online I dont think it deserves the amount of vitriol it received.

I get the connecting lines of the hate but I really dont get the "big picture". Though I guess I could chalk that up to not really being a fan of the series to begin with.

As someone that never played the first, I can only assume the hatred TLOU 2 gets is between those that played the first and those likely jumping on a band wagon. With the former, they are fans of the first game, liked the story and the characters and all and from at least one guy I watched (Cr1tikal), the story of TLOU 2 and its characters are poor in comparison. With the latter, I'm getting the idea of it being a mob mentality or whatever. Some wanting to just piss on it because of whatever reason. You could put people actually buggered by lesbians and the like in the latter but they could be their own category and even then, I don't know how many hate TLOU2 because of lesbians beyond some echo chambers like One Angry Gamer.

I can't even really hate the game but I can despise the people that either try to make it sound like it's the better than anything else while they come off as assholes and those that either want to own the "gamers tm" with TLOU 2 sales and whatever it has and those that want to own the "SJWs" because "Abby is an evil trans" or whatever it is. I just want to laugh at memes and the like, not see some idiots one up each other in some contest in being obnoxious people.

Edit: One other reason I can think some people hate on TLOU 2 is the crunch time the development team faced which honestly, I can see as a valid reason since that means the people working on it are given a lot of pressure and the like to finish the game. And with what they had to put up with, I can see people hating on TLOU 2 with that.

I do not like the way Dark Souls, along with its imitators and influencees, present their difficulty. I personally find Dark Souls' difficulty to be too much. I understand that a lot of hardcore gamers will sing its praises and just tell me to git gud, but I find that the way these games approach difficulty to be incredibly defeating. I can accept if a game isn't for me, that's fair, but it doesn't excuse it from criticism.

Speaking of which, though it may be a fringe minority, but I hate the elitism pushed by Dark Souls fans. Telling players to just git gud and take the difficulty "like a man" I find to be incredibly demoralizing, not to mention annoying. I didn't like being the subject of ridicule and belittlement by my brother and others when I get frustrated with a game and don't like it when it's done to other people for other people's entertainment. It's pathetic and dickish.

Enjoy the game, but don't be an asshole about it.

Still willing to give Bloodborne a shot though, because I hear combat rewards more aggressive play.

On the topic of Dark Souls, I do find it funny people say the games are hard. I will agree there can be some challenge and it puts people off but as someone that has played them along with other games in comparison, Dark Souls is one I can't find hard and that's more because I found games that manage to be more challenging such as Gothic 2 with its Night of the Raven add-on. Granted, balance, genre, and the like is a whole different story but in being rather general about it with my own experience, Dark Souls isn't hard compared to others and there are other games that are both harder and could have that "git gud" thing going for them.

As much as I love it I feel the Doom series,I feel the games are extremely overrated.

Doom 1 and 2 have some great level design and monster roster but get worse in quality the more you go on,especially the latter in the second half.
I would say some fan megawads are better than Doom 2.

Final Doom is alright,Plutonia maps go a little hard with the difficult while TNT is a chore,it feels endless.

Doom 3 is the "black sheep" of the series, while it is underrated by many,it has massive pacing issues and so is the difficulty balance.

Doom 2016 has an amazing OST but the level design is extremely repetitive at times and the highest difficulties are not much of a challenge. Feels more like Serious Sam than Doom.

Doom Eternal,a big improvement overall but in terms of storytelling feels unfocused if it wants to be campy or serious and unbalanced in terms of difficulty.Still a great game though but far from being revolutionary like many fans said. Everything it has in terms of gameplay was already done before.

In the modding scene there would be a lot to say but I generally don't think Brutal Doom is even close to be one of the best mods it has to offer, far from bad but not good for those who want to start.

HDoom isn't even that shocking or erotic,it'sโ€ฆ.meh.

Cosmetic-only microtransactions are awful. Not too long ago, you could get all the cosmetics in a game just through hard work/grinding, but that's becoming less and less of the case as the scope of monetization keeps getting pushed further and further. The only acceptable form of in-game monetization IMO is straight-up DLC that adds a significant amount of content.

I found Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii too overwhelming for my taste, so much that I wasn't able to have fun with it and, therefore, leaving me with a bad impression.
Let me explain: several years ago, I was gifted the game and, at the time, I had a bunch of friends who were big fans of it (and therefore, the series) so they invited me over using the good ol' wi-fi connection to have some party huntings. I tried to give my all but very often I found myself struggling, trying to keep the pace with my peers and, as a result, I get destroyed countless of times. Sure, they helped me understand the mechanics, gather resources or craft, build better armors and weapons but it wasn't enough. Time went on but I just couldn't find it entertaining anymore and I just gave up.

- Graphic is just as important as any other aspect of the game, it don't have to be super realistic or anything, it just has to keep up with the time. You don't want your game to looks like PS2 era game unless that's the art direction you're going for.
- I always find gunplay in Halo series to be its weakest aspect. It really doesn't feel good to fire a gun in Halo, the sound is rather weak and the recoil is barely there at all.
- I actually find Fallout 76 to actually be an enjoyable open world semi-survival MMO, it just really, really need massive polishingโ€ฆ.and maybe tone down on the microtransaction.
- I don't like Criterion-made Need For Speed. Even though NFS series are known for its arcadey handling, atleast they have somewhat realistic aspects to keep your suspension of believe. Not Criterion's NFS, which I think is just Burnout with real cars. The biggest offender has to be Most Wanted reboot because I don't even feel like you own any of the cars, you just find them randomly parking in the street and just take them instead of buying them with your hard-earn money, and the "customization" is a joke, you go to the paint shop and it will paint the car for you and you don't even get to choose.
- I really don't get monthly subscription to play a game. At all.

- Visual Style, and amount of general detail is much more important part of presentation than graphic fidelity. This is why most of the "realistic" games look boring and bland to me โ€“ no matter how many polygons you crunch into a scene, if it looks similar to another "realistic" game (and they all do look same because they all try to get as close to same level of photo realism), then it does not look interesting.

AAA games should stop looking for realism, and start looking at fanstastic visuals instead. Take a look at Unreal (the first one) for example. Does the particle based fire looks realistic? No. Does it look fantastic and interesting? Absolutely.

- Tank controls are fine in the right envronment. Original Tomb Raider IS such an environment โ€“ a precision puzzle platformer with very precise and predictable controls.

- The best part of classic Doom (and other oldshcool FPS ) is level design, and the way you progress in the game is through exploration of environment.
In essence it reminds me of Metroid world design โ€“ The gameplay world is an interconnected place. In the beginning you have access to one area, and you have to explore it to find a way to access new areas, giving you more areas to explore and maybe unlock something in the old area, and so on until you have whole level (game world) available to you, it's just Doom uses keys and switches instead of abilities to achieve similar sense of exploration.

This progression through exploration is the main appeal of Doom for me, and while original games dont always follow that structure, they lay down a really good foundation on which Doom community expanded with amazing amount of great maps.

Basically both Metroidvanias and good Oldshool FPS levels scratch the same itch in similar ways, and while Metroidvanias do it with a good deal of build up and stretch it out, classic FPS do the same in a very concise and concentrated manner. Both of which are enjoyable in their own ways.
Modern shooters (including open world ones) are entirely lacking in that regard.

Opinion specific to Super Smash Bros; I don't think I could ever get angry or upset about any new character addition. I have character preferences of who I'd like to see in more than others but I have yet to feel anything worse than apathy at any of the DLC or base game fighter additions even with widely criticised additions like Byleth and I don't think I ever will.

I think that the whole "EVERY PIECE OF DIALOGUE MUST BE FULLY VOICE-ACTED" meme needs to be killed with fire, since it just leads to companies hyping up big-name Hollywood actors ("HORY SHITTO KEANU REEVES IS VOICING THAT GUY! I LITERALLY DON'T KNOW A SINGLE OTHER FRIGGING THING ABOUT THAT GAME BUT I AM GOING TO PREORDER IT NOW") and bloating their production budgets accordingly, without really adding anything to gameplay.

- Probably not impupolat but the game size in storage it's getting stupdly too big

-Japanese games, either they have convulated story/ anime (ugh) or some boring grind turn based combat (ugggghhh) of course mario kart is an exception

Not so much a "gaming" opinion but it does apply to gaming so I'll throw it out there.

"First Impressions" are an awful way to review or judge a game, it's like watching the first 10-15 minutes of a movie and seeing if it's good based on that, or watching the first episode of a TV show and then judge the rest of it.

It's especially aggravating to me since a lot of shows and games pick up a lot of steam after the first few episodes or first few hours of gameplay such as Regular Show and Kingdom Hearts.

You could also run into the opposite where a show or game starts out good but loses a lot of steam as it goes on such as Adventure Time or even Dark Souls 2.

Oh I got a quick one. While the story may have not been anything too special, and yeah the "authorization" mechanic was a dumb replacement for actually finding upgrades, I still really liked Metroid: Other M, at least when it came to the pure gameplay, action, and locales. Had the story been more akin to something like Fusion and upgrades more like previous Metroid games I'm sure Other M would have been seen as a classic. Also on that note, I dunno why this seems to be considered unpopular in some parts but I'd be totally down for MercurySteam remaking Fusion like they did with Metroid 2 (hell they originally wanted to remake Fusion before Nintendo suggested Metroid 2 due to there being no OFFICIAL version of the game that was playable in the style of Super Metroid and onward). Honestly I'd go as far as to say Samus Returns was probably MercurySteam's best game and feel they could do just as great a job with Fusion, especially given with the Switch's more powerful hardware they could really make the style and the horror elements even better than they were on the GBA.

Metal Gear Survive and Fallout 76 despite being lambasted by their respective communities are still fun games to play, never feel pressured by others for having an opinion

Metal Gear Survive and Fallout 76 despite being lambasted by their respective communities are still fun games to play, never feel pressured by others for having an opinion

Ok, I have a few to list.
-The difficulty of FROMSOFT ARPGs like Dark Souls and Bloodborne is overblown by everybody
-Witcher 3 has a great story but the UI and combat sucks and half the difficulty adjusting options actually break the game
-Ocarina of Time is the most consistently good 3D Zelda and the most fun overall
-The core gameplay of Fallout 4 absolutely makes up for the shit story
-Dark Souls 2's character system was better than any other souls game purely by the freedom and crazy builds you could make that were almost all viable
-Fallout: New Vegas is one of the best games of all time but I never could find a sincere reason to beat it more than once.
-Metroid Zero Mission controls better than Super Metroid
-Halo 3 has the weakest story of all the pre 4 Halo games but gets away with it because it finished the fight.
-Devil May Cry 4 had maybe the best controlling characters in any DMC game before 5 but had the worst bosses and enemy lineup
-On the inverse DMCV only has 2 fun characters and this is the only area DMC4 is superior.

That's all I got for now.

I think Sekiro is Fromsoft's worst modern game.

Don't get me wrong, it's still a great game. But there seem to be some mechanics put into the game just to make it frustrating, rather than add anything of substance. Notably the Dragonrot disease, which punishes you for dying in a difficult game. Even in Demon Souls you only would shift the World Tendency for dying in human form as opposed to soul form.
