The more I look into the situation involving Capt Alex and his "Etika joycons" situation the more I'm starting to think the dude is exploiting Etika's name for personal gain

Like yeah I'm just gonna say I think the guy is really some opportunistic person who is only exploiting not only Etika's name but also knowingly trying to take out some pre-existing grudge with Nintendo (apparently something to do with not being accepted into their now defuct creator's program years ago). Like if anything the dude saw the Melee and Splatoon controversies and decided "hmm, how can I make this situation about me in some way?" and realized the easiest thing to do is "oh I know how about I bring up an old C&D I got months ago that involved multiple infringement claims with multiple joycon shells but make sure I EXPLICITLY bring up the name of a dead person the internet loves?"

And thing is are you gonna see anyone on places like YouTube like SomeOrdinaryGamers or Critikal bring up this information about Capt. Alex? Fuck no, because outrage gets clicks and no one seems to care this guy is likely only exploiting Etika's name for petty reasons. (also speaking of said YouTubers it's somewhat hilarious to me that Critikal, a guy who during his video about his talk with the CEO of YouTube said "I can see there is a human side to this company," seems to act like Nintendo as a whole is this horrible monster when the suits who make the unpopular decisions are not the same as the people who make the games people want to do eSports tournaments for, and with SomeOrdinaryGamers I could swear he was once going "companies are not your friends and can't love you" is now going "this ENTIRE company hates YOU")

That's something that's been bugging me for a while now. I definitely can agree with the mentality of "companies aren't your friend", but I feel like it's kinda dumb when people act like when companies do something like this, they're your enemies and/or doing this out of contempt for the consumer. I don't want to come off like people shouldn't complain or critique this kind of stuff, but I do think that people can get pretty overdramatic with their stance against companies sometimes when they do something like send out C&D's to a fan-project. Doesn't help that a lot of the time, people will jump the gun when they hear some bad news about a company that's already on their bad side when there could be more to the story or it could just be a hoax/lie.

Wait, the C&D was MONTHS AGO!?!?

It happened in September but he's only now bringing it up, and I'm almost damn certain it's because he wanted to bandwagon off the Melee and Splatoon controversies for personal gain of some kind.

It amazes me how none of those people bothered to do research, and after 2-3 days none have taken the time to correct their info and inform fans if they figured out what was actually going on. And yet they feel the need to make fun of journalists or opinion pieces when they get information wrong.

I guess this is what it comes to, chasing the trend and making quick clicks rather than integrity and honesty with one's audience. Because like it or not they are giving a man using the tragedy of a beloved content crestor for their own benefit, and they are following in his footsteps by spreading this misinformation.

I agree that the guy behind the "Etika Joycons" dilemma certainly could have an ulterior motive beyond trying to commemorate Etika. Like what you suggested, it's plausible he is just mentioning it because of Nintendo's recent controversies (Banning Melee, DMCA striking) and could be bringing it up not necessarily because he wants to bring Etika justice, but because it's a situation he could exploit for credibility and recognition. Because this If this theory is true, it's a very scummy move on his part to use Etika as a pawn for his game. The only reason this C&D report is getting attention now is because 1. it's related to Nintendo and 2. it involves a dead person, though the only tie I can find is the selling of the "JoyCon Boyz" controllers – with no confirmation that Etika or his family was even involved in the project. In fact, CptnAlex himself confirmed that Etika's brother disapproved of the project, and asked for donation receipts. CptnAlex later claimed Etika's brother was dragging his name in the mud due to this request. I will give him some commendations for raising the fundraiser money – but, that doesn't justify his actions in the slightest. You can directly donate to charities – not CptnAlex's shady projects and their entirety. Now, I cannot confirm anything for certain in regards to whether or not Etika's relatives granted CptnAlex permission to create these JoyCons with Etika's since the Tweets are unavailable. I know Etika's brother was disapproving of the project, however. I tried finding an archive of it, but to no avail. I haven't found any legitimate reports on the matter. I'll have to take the posters word for it above until any further information comes out. If anybody has an archive of the original tweets, it would be much appreciated.

I too am a little surprised that Cr1tikal and SOG have not questioned the legitimacy of this claim. I remember a while back in 2019, when Etika did unfortunately pass away, they made videos targeting people who were using his name for exploitative reasons (i.e. Jaystation) and looking at the evidence here – not to say that is 100% the case – the legitimacy of CptnAlex's statements and intentions are certainly brought into question. I watch these two YouTubers myself and while I don't defend their actions, I am a bit taken aback that they would just cave into the outrage without looking into this case more.

EDIT: I found a whole reddit thread voicing the same concerns you've illustrated, I suggest giving it a look. https://www.reddit.com/r/smashbros/comments/k9zgho/cptnalex_the_person_behind_the_etika_joycons_is/
