Can someone please explain to me why Communism forbids homosexuality, at least in their earliest incarnations? I can't fathom why an intrinsically atheistic system of government would do that. China didn't decriminalised homosexuality until the late 90s, for example.

You might say "It's a leftover from when Communistic countries still had religion" but I don't buy that since Commusistic countries have a tendency to destroy religious symbols, places of worship, etc. and generally do everything in their power to eradicate a country's old ways, even things that aren't religious. So why it's still discouraged in Chinese media, for example, I can't understand, especially since one would argue the tolerance of homosexuality might help that bit of overpopulation going on over there.

Story isn't a linear path towards full-luxury automated communism. I've seen talks of Hungary reversing abortion, that it was legalized in the 1950s. The government certainly has reduced the number of legal abortions since Orban won the elections in a landslide back in 2010. Why? Hungary wasn't stable, and Orban seems to trying to do something to keep the ship of turning upside down.

Russia is in crisis and in this kind of situation people grab themselves to religious symbols and old school values because there is nothing else that is stable enough.

I don't actually believe in that (I'm catholic) but let me put my atheist hat on.

(Atheist hat on): Religion exists as a mechanism of survival. Without religion, man seeks at least an equivalent. Religion motivates human beings to keep existing on this world and reproducing. Therefore, any crisis will bring religion back and there is no way to get rid of it. You can put humans in a spaceship and isolate them from any holy book, create a crisis and some will worship the stars without any exterior input.

As someone who lives in Russia: most people don't care about LGBTQ+ as long as they keep their tastes to themselves and don't flaunt it in a flamboyant manner (flamboyancy is shunned here in general, at least outside of ruling elite).

The issue here stems from completely different source: as it is always the case, the law makers don't understand the details/nuances of what they make laws about, and since LGBTQ relates to "sexual orientation", anything that is related to LGBTQ is bundled with "sexual content" within difinitions of the law, and as such anything LGBTQ-containing content immediately gets 18+ rating as all other "sexual content" does.
