About

Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon crawler developed by Mojang Studios and Double Eleven in the style of Minecraft. There is no mining or crafting in the game; instead, players explore randomly-generated dungeons with randomly generated monsters and uncover treasure. The game released on May 26th, 2020.

History

Minecraft Dungeons was announced on September 28th, 2018 (announce trailer shown below, left), with an initial release window of 2019.[1] A gameplay trailer was released the following year, on June 9th, 2019, at E3 (shown below, right). At the time, the game was compared to dungeon crawlers like Diablo but with "Minecraft charm."[3] The game allows for solo or cooperative play.

Over the course of development, the release date was pushed to April 2020, but was delayed to May 26th, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. [2] The game went into a beta period from March to April of 2020.

Reception

Minecraft Dungeons released to lukewarm reviews, receiving an aggregate score of 71/100 on Metacritic.[4] Critics praised the game's charm and variety, but noted that the lack of depth typical to a dungeon crawler made the game more accessible but less remarkable.[5] Screenrant[6] wrote the game lacks all the quintessential features of Minecraft and lagged behind its competitors.

Online Presence

The game made a quick impact on YouTube, as Let's Players quickly posted videos of the game. Jacksepticeye posted gameplay of the game on the day of its release, gaining over 250,000 views in less than two hours (shown below, left). CaptainSparklez posted a video of himself playing the beta in March, gaining over 800,000 views (shown below, right).
