About

Toby "Radiation" Fox, also known as FwugRadiation,[1] and known in person as Robert F. Fox,[2] is a musician, artist, and game developer. He is most known for his work on Homestuck, Undertale, and Deltarune, as well as the infamous tune Megalovania. Beginning with Undertale, he frequently represents himself as a small white dog called "the Annoying Dog".

History

Earthbound

Toby's first major work to be released online was the Earthbound romhack "Arn's Winter Quest", which was released on January 1st, 2006.[3] On October 31st, 2008, Toby released the "Earthbound Halloween Hack", otherwise known as "Press The B Button, Stupid!", which included his own custom music.[4] One song in particular, which was titled Megalovania, was used in the Dr. Andonuts fight. It would become one of Toby's signature tunes in future works. He would later contribute more Earthbound-styled music for the tribute album "I Miss You – EarthBound 2012", which was released on Bandcamp on January 1st, 2012.[5] One track for this album, which was titled "Fallen Down", would later go on to be used in the soundtrack for Undertale.

Homestuck / Hiveswap

In 2009, as a senior in high school, Toby created piano covers of songs from Homestuck that he posted on the official forums. These covers were noticed by Andrew Hussie, who started putting his music into the webcomic and eventually hired Toby as music production coordinator.[6] The credits for the comic after its completion in 2016 give him special thanks for doing "most custom sound work" [7] on the project. He was also one of the main composers for Hiveswap, an adventure game based on Homestuck.

The Baby is You

The official MS Paint Adventures and Homestuck forums had a rule prohibiting content involving pregnant children, leading to debates about censorship. In September 2010, Toby joked (screenshot below) that, since it was unclear whether or not the ban extended to music, he had written an album about Dave Strider, one of the main characters of the webcomic, giving birth to John Egbert, another main character.

Toby "Radiation" Fox 9/27/10 11:37 PM i wonder if the pregnant kids thing extends to song 9/27/10 11:38 PM just made a solo album about dave giving birth to john 9/27/10 11:38 PM fml...

Three weeks later, Toby actually released the completed album, known as The Baby Is You, on the forums (see artwork below). Since the content fell under the terms of the ban, it was removed and led to Toby being banned from the forums. Despite this, the album still exists online,[8] and Toby has reused music created for the album on other projects.

Undertale

Gvausurv UNDERTALE

On May 23, 2013, Toby released a demo of Undertale, a retro RPG he was designing almost entirely on his own.[9] Next month, on June 24, he launched a Kickstarter to fund the project, which met its initial funding goal of $5,000 in less than a day.[10] The project would eventually earn over $50,000 from backers, attracting attention from both fans and critics.

The full game was officially released on September 15, 2015. The game amassed an enormous fandom and numerous awards and positive reviews from critics.

Annoying Dog

The Kickstarter video for Undertale [11] represented Toby with pixel art of a small white dog (see above). The dog appears throughout the game, and is known as "the Annoying Dog". Since then, Toby usually represents himself as the Annoying Dog rather than with actual images of himself, such as showing an animation of the Dog playing piano during the segment of the Undertale 5th Anniversary Concert in 2020.

Deltarune

Toby first teased a follow-up to Undertale on December 31, 2015.[12] The official announcement of his second game, Deltarune, came on October 31, 2018, when the first chapter was released as a free demo. The second chapter was also released for free on September 17, 2021.

Other Notable Musical Works

During the development of Undertale, Toby composed music (see below) for Cucumber Quest, a video game-inspired webcomic by Gigi D.G., who would do character design on Undertale and Deltarune.

Toby would later go on to compose music for the 2019 videogame Escaped Chasm, which was developed by Undertale and Deltarune artist Temmie Chang.[13]

In 2019, Toby composed a track for Pokemon: Sword and Shield .[14] Upon its official release, multiple sources noticed the melody originated from a track on "The Baby Is You".[15]
