Origin

The original image was created by artist Alex Ries and entitled 'Metahuman.' It was published to DeviantArt^[1] on March 31st, 2015 (shown below). The image depicts a humanoid alien, the metahuman, looking down upon Birrin, Hexapedal animals, on their homeworld Chriirah, a sci-fi environment.

The earliest known use of the picture as an object labeling meme was posted to r/MemeTemplatesOfficial^[2] by u/excretadeleta on February 29th, 2020 (shown below).

The template began gaining popularity over the following months. On March 30th, 2020, Redditor TheCatHatter uploaded a variation to /r/dankmemes^[3] that gained over 26,000 points (shown below, left). To date, the most popular post to use the template was uploaded to r/DankMemes^[4] by u/Jommy69 on October 7th, 2020, gaining over 106,000 points (shown below, right).
