About
Animate Anyone AI is an AI program by Alibaba Group that claims to convert still images into motion videos. The program was promoted as AI, using videos showing people standing still alongside a video of them dancing, supposedly manipulated by the user. Videos of "Animate Anyone" alongside GitHub links were shared on Reddit and X in late November and early December 2023, with some users expressing doubts about the efficacy of the program, and others expressing apprehension about how it can be used wrongly.
Origin
The earliest known post about "Animate Anyone" was posted to GitHub[1] by "Alibaba Group" on November 28th, 2023. The GitHub page contained links to a research paper and a YouTube video, hosted by YouTube account Hookszdp (shown below). It is unclear if the program is legitimate.
On November 29th, X[2] user @hirochuu8 posted a video showing examples of the program animating still images, gathering over 20,000 likes in four days (seen below).

On December 3rd, X[5] user @ijbolistani made a post warning against how such a program could be used to make deep fake videos, gathering over 90,000 likes in a day (seen below, left). Also on December 43rd, X[6] user @8teAPi commented on how the program could be the "end" of the TikTok influencer (seen below, right).
X[7] user and tech journalist @julesterpak made a post expressing skepticism about the efficacy, or even existence, of Animate Anyone tech (seen below).
Found two of the OG TikToks -- they’re from creators with large audiences. While this will undoubtedly be a thing, these examples seem to potentially fabricate the tech’s capabilities? Like it would make sense for the “Ours” examples to show different moves than the OGs, right ? https://t.co/mMcOTSps9X pic.twitter.com/tzG6lPChRQ
