Part of a series on Stick Figure Animations. [View Related Entries]

About

Animator vs. Animation is an animation video that got uploaded onto Newgrounds in 2006. In the video, an animator draws a stick figure in Flash 8. The stick figure, however, breaks free and wreaks havoc over the app.

Origin

On June 3rd, 2006 Alan Becker, under the name noogai, uploaded "Animator vs. Animation." The video got uploaded onto Newgrounds on June 3rd, 2006, and has 2.8 million views on Newgrounds[5] as of May 2017 and over 25 million views on YouTube (shown below). The video is a stick figure animation featuring a stick figure revolting and fighting against his creator until the program is quit without being saved.

Spread

Since being uploaded to Newgrounds, the viral video has been uploaded onto many other places, like YouTube and eBaum's World. Many of the YouTube reuploads have been removed with millions of views, so it is impossible to gauge the actual amount of views Animator vs Animation got on YouTube.

On March 15th, 2007, a sequel to the original animation was finished uploaded to Newgrounds.[6] It was also uploaded to YouTube on May 14th, 2007. As of May 2017, this video has 3.3 million views on Newgrounds and 14.6 million on YouTube.

On August 6th, 2011, a "part two" to the second animation was uploaded to Newgrounds. It was also uploaded to YouTube on October 2, 2011. As of May 2017, this video has 1.7 million views of Newgrounds and 30 million views on YouTube. The video ends with a blue screen of death to finish the series off.

On October 2nd, 2014, the fourth installment was released, despite the 3rd symbolizing the end of the trilogy. This video received 80 million views on YouTube as of November 2017.

eBaum's World Controversy

After the original Animator vs Animation video became viral through Newgrounds and other sites, it was stolen and uploaded to the popular website eBaum's World, a site notorious for publishing stolen content and claiming it as it's own. After this incident, on June 12th, 2006, Steve Lerner, owner of the popular animation site Albino Blacksheep, declared that he would declare legal action against Bauman for stealing the video (shown below, left).[9] This prompted Bauman to send Becker a check of $250 which he received, and have Becker be the defacto winner of their $1,000 "contest", under the condition that he would allow Animator vs Animation to be hosted on the site without legal action, and write a statement clearing eBaum's World's tainted name. Becker did end up writing the testament, (shown below, right).

Getting too serious. June 12, 2006 I'd like to thank those with morals who have contacted me to support Albino Blacksheep and our member Alan Becker the author of Animator vs. Animation. As I reported earlier Alan's copyright has been violated by another website. Alan allowed three websites in total to post his file including here at ABS, but no other sites beyond the three. As the copyright holder, Alan has full say where his file may and may not be posted according to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998 Alan specifically did not allow Mr. Bauman's site to post his file, but Mr. Bauman did so anyways hoping Alan would never even notice. I have spoken to Alan and Alan's father who will take the necessary legal steps against Mr. Bauman. Although it will take some time and money, and I will personally help out anyway I can in this process. I have already donated small funds. I am familiar with Mr. Bauman's documented (il)legal tactics, loopholes and outright lies including his reaction to stealing a file that I worked on, so will make sure Alan is prepared for that. It goes without question to regulars here that I have made personal connections with hundreds of animators over the past many years who submit their work here, and I have permission to post every file on this page that is in the Flash format. Alan specifically was smart enough to add MochiBot tracking code that I provided him to the three legitimate copies of his flash file. This is how we have digital proof of the copyright violation, and that the file was decompiled by the actions of Mr Bauman's corporation. As well the tracker serves as proof that this is the site that is the source of the file. Thanks again for the support. I can't say I am surprised at the amount of people contacting me who have been victims of Mr. Bauman's actions without receiving credit nor giving Mr. Bauman any permission to publish files. If this post concerns you, time to revisit my copyright information article which includes an audio clip of Mr. Bauman's employee stating there are no rules and regulations on the Internet. You wish, Mr Bauman

They contacted me BEFORE they posted my animation on their site. Other sites did not take the time to do that. They have bought my animation for a good $250, while letting me keep distribution rights They also entered my work into their monthly contest." - Alan Becker, Artist usions Magic Archives Join the many successful artists who have made it big on eBaum's World!! After Becker issued the testimonial, he issued an apology to Albino Blacksheep (shown below). He also sent back the $250 Bauman sent him and demanded to get the flash and statement removed from the site. The animation was removed from eBaum's World on June 26, 2006.[10][11]

Hello, I am the author of Animator vs. Animation I feel so ashamed, and the world is ashamed of me. I fell into eBaum's trap. I gave them fuel to fight back. With their constant persuasion and offers for money, they made me write a quote saying that everything was fine. Of course everything was fine for me, because I had the money they had given me. What can you expect, I was dead poor before, I have no experience with business. The quote says they contacted me before they posted my animation on their website, however I did not give them permission to put it on.

This event was heavily discussed on Albino Blacksheep, Something Awful, and YTMND. [12]

Spin-Offs

Becker has also created some spin-off videos of the original. One of the most popular examples is "Animation vs. Minecraft," which has over 81 million views on YouTube (shown below, left).

The popularity of these spin-offs prompted Becker to start a series called "AVM Shorts", a series showing the stick figures from the fourth installment of the series' daily life in the computer. The first video, released on November 18th, 2017, earned over 10 million views as of January 2018 (shown below, left).[7] The second episode released one month later on December 18th, 2017, and has over 13.8 million views as of January 2018 (shown below, right).[8]

Parodies

Due to the popularity of the original videos, many parodies have been made, many based off of other software like Pivot or Stick Nodes. Many of these have millions of views.
