As A Canadian is a phrase that started trending on Canadian Twitter on November 3rd, 2020, due to the 2020 United States Presidential Election. As Canadians watched the election that night the phrase saw a massive increase in use as they shared their opinions on the election from an outside perspective.

Origin

The phrase "as a Canadian" grew in popularity on Twitter in the days leading up to the U.S. presidential election, used by Canadian Twitter users to give their opinion on various aspects of U.S. politics from an outside perspective (example from November 1st, 2020 shown below, left). On November 2nd at 11:44 PM, Twitter user angeleyerolls13[1] posted a tweet using the phrase attached to an image from Spongebob Squarepants, representing an early image macro using the phrase in relation to the election (shown below, right).

(Shown below, left). The post gained over 10,000 likes and 2,300 retweets in a day, and inspired further memes using the phrase. On the same day at 8:32 AM, Twitter user TrainerGloria[3] tweeted, "As a Canadian, I send greetings to America and hope the 4-year nightmare is about to end" along with a photo of a man peeing an expletive into the snow (shown below, right). The post gained over 3,300 likes and 495 retweets in the same span of time.

On the same day at 3:34 PM, Twitter user MadeInCanada posted a meme using the phrase, garnering over 3,700 likes and 650 retweets in just under a day (shown below). At 7:45 PM, HuffPost published an article detailing the memes as a show of solidarity with Americans.[5]
