Backdoor is an AAVE slang term used to describe the act of "snitching" on someone or cutting a "backdoor deal" with the police. The term is sometimes used in verb form (backdooring), with TikToks about being backdoored or learning to spot someone trying to backdoor you gaining traction in 2023 and 2024.

Origin

Use of the term "backdoor" in a manner similar to the word "snitch" or "rat" gained traction online in early 2020, with a February 1st, 2021 TikTok[1] post by @quanodag gathering over 400,000 plays and 100,000 likes in three years (seen below).

A March 15th, 2021 post about being backstabbed or "backdoored" by a friend by TikToker[2] @subject_b gathered over 500,000 plays and 100,000 likes in three years (seen below, left). On January 28th, 2021, TikToker[3] @50fitch posted a sketch joking about how fast someone can backdoor or backstab you. The post gathered over 1 million plays and 200,000 likes in two years (seen below, right).

Memes and sketches joking about the "homie" trying to "backdoor you" began to gain traction in 2023, as seen in an August 30th, 2023 post by @50fitch[4] that gathered over 1 million plays and 360,000 likes in a year.
