About

Bing AI Characters Doing 9/11 refers to a series of AI art images created by users exploiting Bing's Image Creator to make it appear as if characters from popular culture are flying planes into the Twin Towers and were responsible for the September 11th, 2001, terrorist attacks. The images notably highlighted the challenge of creating adequate filters for AI image generation to prevent offensive content following Bing's AI tool trending online in early October 2023.

Origin

On September 30th, 2023, Twitter user @animeserbia[5] posted the earliest known example depicting an image of Tom and Jerry flying planes on 9/11, gaining over 4,200 retweets and 66,000 likes in one week (shown below).

On October 3rd, 2023, Twitter user @TolstoyBB[1] posted an image of Shinji and Asuka from Neon Genesis Evangelion piloting a plane toward the Twin Towers, ostensibly portraying them as the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks. They captioned the photo "Thank you, Microsoft Bing." The tweet gained over 790 retweets and 5,000 likes in two days (shown below).

In the replies to TolstoyBB's tweet, other users began posting various, humorous 9/11 perpetrators they'd been able to generate. For example, on October 4th, user @PMDucktle[2] posted a variation with Lego pilots (shown below, left) and @rwvessol[3] posted an example with Full Metal Alchemist characters (shown below, right). Neither saw a significant engagement.

TolstoyBB's tweet caught the attention of 404media.[4] There, author Samantha Cole generated several more images as she discussed how it was possible to bypass Bing's filters to make the images. Bing's filters prevent users from generating scenes of violence and terrorism. The phrases "World Trade Center," "twin towers" and "9/11" return errors on the generator, but by making the prompt read, "flying towards two skyscrapers," she was able to create images of characters including Kirby, Walter White and SpongeBob flying towards the Twin Towers (examples shown below).
