About
BMW Advert Parodies are a series of remix videos parodying BMW's 'Don't Postpone Joy' ad campaign, featuring BMW cars breaking or having mechanical issues. The meme follows a series of car advertisement parodies, of other notable brands like Volkswagen and Toyota, that became popular in the late 2010s and early 2020s.
Origin
On September 10, 2014, BMW India[1] launched an ad campaign called 'Don't Postpone Joy' in which the life of an Indian kid is shown as he grows to adult hood and decides on getting a BMW car, and earning over 208,000 views in eight years (shown below). The end of the video has the tagline 'Book A Test Drive Now' as a prominent part of the marketing, which was then lifted and used as the primary punchline within other types of videos.
Spread
On October 31, 2021, a YouTube user named iiingアジAzi[2] posted a video of a BMW steering wheel going crazy by spinning back and forth wildly, with the "Book A Test Drive Now" ending card from the BMW India commercial being shown at the end, gaining over 600,000 views in eight months (shown below, left). A week later, the same channel, iiingアジAzi[3], posted another video showing a BMW lock malfunction with the same tagline used in the previous video, this time only getting over 100,000 views in the same eight months (shown below, right).
As more videos appeared online, some users began combining multiple videos into compilations. This can be seen in the videos by two different YouTube accounts, with FunnyTikTok[4] creating the video on the left, and Karışık ÇerEZ[5] creating the video on the right, with the dates posted being January 6th, 2022 and November 18th, 2021, respectfully (shown below).
