About
The Bold Glamour Filter is a TikTok beauty filter created using machine learning that attempts to make the user look more "glamorous" by adding makeup and changing their facial features. The filter went viral on TikTok in February 2023 as users began posting videos applying it to themselves, many expressing shock over how good it makes them look. As it trended online, some also expressed concerns over the filter hurting young people's self-confidence and fuelling body-image issues.
Origin
TikTokers began uploading videos showcasing the effects of the Bold Glamour filter as early as February 25th, 2023. For example, on that date, TikToker[1] @_kaybrooks_ posted a video showcasing the filter, garnering over 850,000 views in two days (shown below).

The Bold Glamour Filter reportedly utilizes machine learning, specifically Generative Adversarial Networks (GANS), to achieve the effect rather than an augmented 3D face mesh like other beauty filters.[4] This means that every pixel on the face of the user is regenerated after referencing a dataset of images, then output onto the user's face. In March 2023, TikToker @zhangsta posted a video explaining this (shown below).
@zhangsta Lots of controversy around this viral new filter #boldglamourfilter and how realistic it looks. 🤯 i was curious on how it works, s/o to @luke.hurd for explaining the tech behing this new filter! #deeplearning #augmentedreality #zhangsta #todayilearned #newtech #machinelearning #viralfilter #explained #teenagelookfilter ♬ original sound – ZHANGSTA🫡
Spread
The filter became increasingly popularized over the following days as TikTokers posted videos expressing shock over how it makes them look, with some suggesting the filter could be harmful to people's self-confidence. On February 26th, 2023, TikToker[2] @vinnylocasto posted a video using the filter that garnered over 130,000 views in a day (shown below, left). On the same day, TikToker[3] @shoelover99 posted a video criticizing the filter while using it, garnering over 1.5 million views in a day (shown below, right).
