Bongo Cat Hitting the Like and Retweet Buttons, also known from its Japanese Twitter hashtag #いいねとRT同時押し (translation: Push Like and RT at the same time), refers to a series of images in which the subject can be seen pressing the "like" and "retweet" Twitter buttons simultaneously. Although it was inspired from a Bongo Cat edit from September 2018, the meme has been used with a variety of characters as the subject.
Origin
On September 16th, 2018, Twitter[1] user @genuineneckass created an image of Bongo Cat hitting both the like and retweet button (shown below). In five months, the tweet has received more than 72,000 retweets and 146,000 likes.
Spread
The following day, @genuineneckass tweeted a video that animated the image.[7] The post received more than 1,400 retweets and 2,900 likes in less than six months (shown below).

On September 18th, 2018, KnowYourMeme user achunkofbutter[3] uploaded an image of Bongo Cat titled, "For when you see a good bongo cat," which showed Bongo Cat hitting both the upvote and favorite button on Imgur. When the post was uploaded to Imgur, it received more than 10 million views in five months (shown below, left). On January 7th, 2019, Twitter[8] user @ebi_gohan made the first known redraw of the format using Akari Kizuna from the Vocaloid series of VOICEROID2.[9] In ten months, this post gained over 3,700 retweets and 8,200 likes (shown below, right).
On January 18th, 2019, Twitter[2] user @yuki39247652 created their own variation using a character named Ririka from a Japanese smartphone game called Compass Combat Providence Analysis System, using this hashtag #コンパス式いいねとリツイートをする奴ら (shown below). The tweet garnered more 120 retweets and 560 likes in two weeks.
On January 21st, 2019, an archive Twitter account for Bongo Cat, run by user @poyotxt, posted about the sudden rise of Japanese Twitter users parodying this image format (shown below).[5]

On January 28th, 2019, the creator of Pop Team Epic, bkub, shared his own version of the format with Pipimi using bazookas that contain a retweet and like button, receiving 36,000 retweets and 90,000 likes in 5 days.[6]
