About

Borgir, Burgir or Boorgir, refers to a viral video of Tajik singer Abdu Rozik, a 17-year-old who looks like a child due to a genetic disorder, saying "burger" in an accent so it sounds like "borgir," then taking a bite of the burger. The video was first uploaded to Instagram in May, with an alternate angle posted to TikTok that day. It went viral across social media over the course of the next two months.

Origin

Rozik is a famous singer in Tajikistan, who recently gained a further social media fanbase after allegedly fighting Hasbulla Magomedov in May.

On May 2nd, 2021, Abdu Rozik posted a video to his Instagram[1] page in which he eats a number of food items, first saying the name of the item before eating it (shown below). The last food items are burgers. Rozik picks up the first one, says, "borgir," then takes a bite. The video gained over 1.1 million views in a month.

On the same day, an alternate angle of the video was uploaded to TikTok[2] by @the__li, garnering over 22.6 million views in the same span of time (shown below).

Spread

On May 23rd, 2021, YouTuber[3] Call_Me_Sullyyy posted an edited version of the TikTok upload featuring music from The Legend of Zelda after Rozik bites the burger, garnering over 1.9 million views in a month (shown below). A month later the same edit was shared on Instagram,[4] garnering over 500,000 views and 112,000 likes in 14 hours.

The TikTok[5][6] upload also inspired a number of lip-dub videos and skits set to the original sound over the course of May (popular examples shown below, left and right).

Over the course of June, users continued to upload new edits of the footage to YouTube.
