Bucket Hat Luffy is a series of fan art related to the appearance of One Piece character Monkey D Luffy's parade balloon at the 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The balloon showed Luffy wearing a hat that pointed downward like a bucket hat instead of his iconic straw hat, inspiring fan art.

Origin

On November 23rd, 2023, One Piece protagonist Monkey D Luffy made his debut as a parade balloon at the 2023 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. However, the brim of his straw was caught on a tree, which caused it to deflate (shown below). The deflated brim made his hat resemble a bucket hat instead.^[1]

Various internet users began commenting on the Luffy balloon's new bucket hat look, including X^[2] user @DexStewart13, who compared the balloon to Gilligan from Gilligan's Island on November 23rd, 2023, gathering over 1,700 likes in five days (seen below, left). On November 24th, X^[3] user @huyandere posted fan art showing Luffy fishing, gathering over 17,000 likes in four days (seen below, right).

On November 23rd, Redditor^[4] JigglyJacob posted fanart showing Luffy wearing a bucket hat to /r/OnePiece, gathering over 780 upvotes in four days (seen below, left).
