The phrase "buttfucking complicity" originated in a user review of Circle Takes the Square's 2004 record As the Roots Undo posted on SputnikMusic.com in early 2010. The author of the review, who went by the username MichaelJordan, accused the band of "buttfucking complicity" as part of a long and bizarre diatribe written in the form of a geometric proof. He defined it as follows:

By something that is guilty of buttfucking complicity, I understand that which knows itself to have made something that is utter trash and yet parades around like it has not.

MichaelJordan further claimed that this demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that the band's music was artistically worthless, and that they were moreover guilty of consciously deceiving the public into thinking it was good.

Following the controversy that surrounded this review, the phrase became a recurring meme within and without the website.
