By The Way You're Gay refers to an edited clip from SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D of SpongeBob flying through the air only to stop, look and point at the audience and say, "by the way you're gay" before continuing to soar off screaming. The video was first created as part of a YouTube Poop in 2018 and went viral over the following years (particularly in 2021) through reuploads, inspiring edits recreating it with other characters.

Origin

On April 11th, 2018, YouTuber^[1] MOTION2 posted a YouTube Poop video titled "Spingebill Journeys Across Youtube To Save the 4th Dimension" (shown below, note that the video is blocked in some countries due to a copyright claim by ViacomCBS). The video is an edit of the SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D, 4-D film and ride that premiered at Paramount Park in 2003.^[2] Around timestamp 3:45, SpongeBob is sent flying into the air screaming. In the middle of his ascent he stops, winks and finger-guns to the audience and says "by the way you're gay," then continues through the air. The video gained over 56,000 views in three years.

In the original clip from SpongeBob SquarePants 4-D, SpongeBob looks to the audience and says "by the way, you're doing great for your first day," as the 4-D film is from the perspective of a new employee at the Krusty Krab (shown below).

On June 9th, 2018, YouTuber^[3] Zeezia posted an isolated version of the clip, gaining over 2.6 million views in two years. On September 8th, 2021, YouTuber^[4] SoloBites uploaded a 4K version of the clip, gaining over 93,500 views in a month (shown below).

On October 5th, YouTuber^[5] SilentManJoe uploaded a recreation of the clip using Team Fortress 2's Scout character in place of SpongeBob, gaining over 253,000 views in a week (shown below, left). On October 9th, YouTuber^[6] Super 3D Mario Show YT posted a video using the original's audio over modified Super Mario 64 footage, gaining around 400 views in four days (shown below, right).
