Chads Dancing To California Gurls In Friday the 13th: The Game is a viral video trend in which players of Friday the 13th: The Game perform the "shake it" emote in front of Jason Voorhees using the Chad Kensington character while wearing the "spring break 1984" clothing with Katy Perry's "California Gurls" playing in the background. The trend has spread outside the game, which has resulted in live-action fan videos involving the dance, as well as videos of characters from other video games performing the dance.

Origin

The trend started on May 26th, 2022. TikToker relaxedwindowgaming posted the first video which used the Chad character performing the "shake it" emote as Jason Voorhees enters a cabin with Katy Perry's "California Gurls" playing in the background.^[1] The video (shown below, left) received over 1.2 million views and over 177,000 likes in nearly two months. On June 11th, 2022, relaxedwindowgaming posted another video using the dance emote and song, but with two Chads dancing in front of a fallen Jason Voorhees.^[2] The video (shown below, right) received over 15.4 million views and over 2.6 million likes in over one month.

Other TikTok users would make live-action videos using the dance and song. On June 6th, 2022, TikToker rickyjames710 posted a POV video in which he hits the viewer with his baseball bat, then proceeds to do the dance over the viewer as they're knocked to the ground. The video (shown below, left) received over 3.7 million views and over 614,000 likes in over one month.^[3] On June 15th, 2022, TikToker itslegeta posted a video using a similar setup as rickyjames710's video. The video (shown below, right) received over 1.9 million views and over 353,000 likes in over one month.^[4]

On June 13th, 2022, TikToker mrfinnymore3 posted a video in which he's cowering in a bathroom in one scene followed by him performing the dance in the next scene. The video (shown below, left) received over 1.8 million views and over 331,000 likes in over one month.^[5] On July 3rd, 2022, TikToker Loczniki posted a video in which Locz and Niki perform the dance together. The video (shown below, right) received over 22.1 million views and over 2.8 million likes in over two weeks.^[6]

In Other Games

The dance was recreated in other games with "California Gurls." On June 23rd, 2022, YouTube user Astolfo Alter posted a Team Fortress 2 video using the dance using the soldier character, as well as a montage of other characters doing the dance. The video (shown below) received over 40,000 views in one month.^[7]

On July 6th, 2022, Twitter user AsepriteRico posted a video in which Deltarune characters Kris and Noelle performed the dance next to the body of Berdly. The Twitter video received over 584,000 views, and over 59,600 likes in two weeks.^[8] The video was also reposted to their YouTube channel on the same day (shown below), where it received over 59,000 views in two weeks.^[9]
