About

Check Your Privilege Challenge is a series of Put a Finger Down TikTok videos that deal with white privilege. The videos, which became popular on TikTok in late May 2020, typically feature a TikToker holding all ten fingers up and then putting one down when they've experienced a certain example of prejudice. The name of the challenge, Check Your Privilege derives from an online expression used mainly by social justice bloggers to remind others that the body and life they are born into comes with specific privileges that do not apply to all arguments or situations.

Origin

On May 22nd, 2020, TikTokter @boss_bigmamma uploaded the first example of the "Check Your Privilege" edition of put a finger down (shown below). The video gained over 12,900 likes in two weeks.

Spread

On June 1st, TikTokers @allisonholkerboss and @momlifepatience uploaded videos performing the challenge using @boss_bigmamma's audio (shown below, left). Their videos garnered over 536,400 likes and 75,700 likes respectively in four days. The next day, TikToker @mr.linehan used the challenge to disprove its accuracy which received over 63,900 likes in three days (shown below, right). Popbuzz[1] published an article on the trend.
